Hi, I am getting really frustrated with the "log cabin" variation quilt I am making. I have the top all done and was ready to sandwich and quilt.
My daughter stopped by the other night and said it looks like I have "swasticas" all over it!!!! She suggested I applique something in the center of the 4 patch block to hide that look. Here are two photos.... First one is the block consisting of 4 log cabin blocks. Second photo I have laid the applique on the center (I don't really like this look) Now what do I do?? I kinda saw the "swastica" too but thought after I did the quilting it wouldn't be so obvious. Please help! :( log cabin 4 blocks to the section log cabin with applique laying on center |
maybe use the tan flowered fabric to make a block for the centetrr.

My DH just told me to just go ahead and quilt it as it is.... He said it will be fine. I think that is what I am going to do... stop driving myself crazy over this! If I don't like it when it's done, I will donate it - someone needy will be happy to have it.
It was supposed to be a wedding gift for my niece next summer, so I still have plenty of time to make another one for her. I don't think I have ever struggled with ANY quilt as much as I am with this one! :? |
I don't see that when I look at your quilt. I think it is very nice. If you like it that way, then quilt it as it. You have done a beautiful job. :)

Did you know originally the "swastika" was a religious symbol?? The Nazi's adopted it and perverted it, so in my opinion you are just giving it back a little class!!

I think it is beautiful. The butterfly can go in random spots just to throw you eyes off but I like them in the small green squares. You did a nice job with this one. :)

I wouldn't have thought of them either but you brought it up. Most people wouldn't notice unless you tell them.
|
i see windmill arms not a swastika =)
|
I did this same layout for my great-neices baby quilt - I made a temple of a half circle and quilted from center out to the corner of each log cabin so that it made it look like a pinwheel! It came out beautiful and is well loved!
|
My fisrt thought was windmill shapes. Looks good to me.
|
At first glance, I saw a pinwheel.
So, maybe just go ahead and finish it. Call it something related to pinwheels (maybe) and consider it done. |

Yes, the butterflies can go in lots of places, just applique them around to catch the eye. Unfortunately, lots of us older folks (I'm 77) will instantly identify that most hated of all symbols from WW2. But in the long run, it's YOUR quilt and if the one it's being made for likes it, then go on and quilt it. It's not going to go on display in a public place, is it? It should keep someone warm at home, made with love. And it'll become a family heirloom, treasured because you made it with love. |
I think your husband is on the money. You did a beautiful job with this and I agree that you should quilt it "as is".
|
Thank you all for your comments.... I am going to finish it as is and be happy with it. I am sure the quilting I do will draw the eye to that and not the blades. I too shall think of it as a windmill and will tell my DD that is what it is... :)
|
I wouldn't have noticed, but you pointed out...But looks like nice work for sure!

I see a water wheel, I'd just go with quilting it, it will be a pretty quilt.
|
Sorry to say this but when I first saw your blocks I thought "Oh that's unusual, swastikas." Then I read what your DD said.
|
The blocks look like Dutch windmills, I would put a big yo-yo or button in the middle and tulips or flowers on the bottom. Moosegirl

I agree with your hubby. It will be fine.
