Years ago, (about 14 I think) I told my sister about t-shirt quilts. In talking she mentioned all the nice shirts her son had and I said I would make a quilt out of them. So she started saving the shirts. Drew's senior year was coming up and she reminded me of this. Sent me home from Utah last summer with an extra suitcase full of t-shirts. Drew had no clue!! Shirts just went in the wash and sometimes never made it back to his dresser. Anyway, after much cutting and pressing and sewing this is what we (my hubby helps alot) came up with. Fronts of t-shirts are on the front and backs are on the back. I even managed to find places to use parts of the sleeves. It is basically a full-size quilt and very heavy. I used flannel instead of batting because some blocks just couldn't be quilted in the middle. What do you think??

You did an awesome job! Was it hard to sew since T's are stretchy? I haven't attempted this kind.

Very nice job-----Drew will love it
|
I think it is the best looking T-shirt quilt I have ever seen! Very nice!!! Love your idea of using the backs on the back, very clever!
|
Love the tee-shirt quilt. I have one in the works for DH and he keeps asking me about it -- LOL Wished I had saved some of the backs for the back - what a great idea. Beautiful job.
|
LOL, I had intentions of making a tshirt quilt. I bought the tshirts at Goodwill for 1.00 and washed them, but wound up wearing them.
|
WOW you did a great job and I'll bet he just loves it too. There are lots of memories there for him.
|
Amazing!! :D
|
Fantastic! What a lucky guy...I bet he will have a stroke when he sees all those shirts that "disappeared"! How great is that?!
|
because the shirts are stretchy, you need to put a type of fusible stabilizer on each one .I have never made one but am thinking about it and have started to ask questions of those who know
|
Kathy D-very cool quilt by the way, forgot to say that

Beautiful! I bet you'll be his favorite aunt!

That's a wonderful looking quilt. I really like t-shirt quilts. You did a very nice job and I bet he loves it.

Very cool...what a great keepsake!!
I gotta ask...where was your avatar pic taken? We (my ex and I) use to do historic re-enactment, and you remind me of the fun we had in your primitive outfit. New Salemn maybe?? |
Wonderful job! I love it!
|
Love it!
|
Way cool! I hope your sister has a video camera going when he opens it! I would laugh so hard if he said he'd been wondering where they were!

I did stabilize the t-shirts. I bought a bolt of iron-on interfacing at Wal-Mart. There is some waste but a lot of that got used when I did the smaller sections. None of the blocks have pieced interfacing (it is not recommended). He called me the day his mom gave it to him. I'm not sure who has fonder memories, him or his mom!!
My picture was taken at St. Charles, MO at the 2004 signature event for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. So it is a much earlier time period than New Salem. Our family did volunteer quite regularly at New Salem during the 1990s - that's where our re-enactment activities started. We were always known as "Karen's mom and dad" never by our real names. We let the girls (3 of them) wander the village. As long as they stayed in the village other volunteers kinda kept an eye on them. Our youngest had one of her senior high school pictures taken there! That's how much she loved it, and still does. |
We re-enacted the fur trade era. I was on the Board of Directors for Fort Creve Couer for a few years. I really do miss it!!
|
That is an AWESOME quilt.
Great Job!!!! k |
Great job - and I'll remember the stabilizing the tshirts when I finally get around to taking all of the old tshirts off of my husband's closet shelf. You gave me the incentive to get moving on it!
|
It is so nice to have your confidence boosted when you have taken so long to complete a project. Thanks everyone!!! I just love this place.

Fabulous job, That was a lot of work and it turned out great :D
|
That is VERY inspirational....I am just sorry I didn't do something like this for my two boys :(
Great job Kathy |
Beautyful quilt.
I also saved team softball t-shirts. My daughter has been playing for 12 years. I put them all together and gave it to her when she went to college. It is the best thing she has to remembering me going to all of her games and practices. closetisfull |
Wow! It turned out terrific! I know your nephew was thrilled! Inspires me to save some shirts! I love how you put the backs on the back! Very clever.
|
He is going to love it!! You did a great job-I love the t-shirt backs on the back of the quilt-I have never seen that before. Great idea.
|
A totally awesome T-Shirt Quilt! It's the first time I've seen the backs used as the back, what a clever idea :D
|
kathyd...an awesome t-shirt quilt!! I am getting ready to do my oldest child's shirts too...I have ironed the interfacing and cut out the t-shirts. She has so many that I have them all cut out different sizes to get them all in 1...who would have thought to add them to the back!!:))(Great idea too!)I will have to puzzle piece mine...:0)Thanks for sharing...love it! Great t-shirt quilt! Your nephew will love it for sure.
In the past month or so I've cut up all my young grandson's t-shirts that he's grown out of with the idea of making him a quilt either for xmas or his b'day in 2009. Geesh I didn't think of saving the backs to use like you did, love that idea. Instead I used them to wash the car etc! Well he's just turning 9 so I know he'll be growing out of more shirts and next time I'm saving the backs! thanks for sharing sue |
AWESOME quilt
SOOOOOOO creative :) |
Oh, WOW! You did a magnificant job. You have inspired me to try this eventually one day.

Glad everyone likes the quilt. I have to tell you though, doing the back as well as the front was my husband's idea. He's so smart. He also helped with the "puzzle piecing" of the different sizes. We did many layouts before we found one that worked. We also tried to balance colors so that it wasn't too white or red on one side.
PS the sleeves that didn't get used do make great staining rags for woodwork and waxing rags for cars. |
:D What a great gift!!! He will no doubt cherish it forever. Great work!

Awesome T-shirt quilt! How clever to use the backs for the back. Husbands do come in handy for good ideas and getting you out of tight spots! Mine comes through all the time! He's a keeper.
