I think this was the 2nd or 3rd quilt I ever made - two years ago. I made it for my friend's 80th birthday (she's in the picture). She loves butterflies - especially those blue ones and while I was searching on line for fabric I found this kit on overstock.com. The fabric was perfect so I ordered it. Until I joined this forum, I'd never heard of OBW, Kaleidoscope, or Stack and Whack. So which one does this really fall into? I know I always said it looked like a Kaleidoscope but the pieces were cut when I got it and since looking at all these wonderful options on the QB I now want an answer. :)

:) I would just call it BEAUTIFUL! Sorry, I'm a newbie, working on my first quilt, but I'm sure you'll get an answer to your question.

LOL! Thank you, onthelake.

I believe it is Stack and Whack or Kaleidoscope. OBW stands for one block wonder, as in the block produced comes from all one shape. (equalateral triangle?)
|
It looks like a stack and whack, but I don't know what a OBW looks like

Those things .. in my opinion.. are all similar, the actual determination would be how they were cut out.. I have done stars like those and I did them as a kaleidoscope.
I cut out a template put markers on it and cut each "point" individually. The end result is the same, but I can get much more precise results with that style than the stack and whack. |

Technically - BEAUTIFUL!!!!
I have always thought that they were different paths to the same conclusion. |

I haven't done any of those but the one you made is beautiful!

stack and whack or Kaleidoscope, depending on how it was cut. OBW assembles the pieced blocks without any background or sashing (and uses 6 triangles to make a hexagon). Most stack and whack's I've seen use 8 triangles or diamonds to make some type of star, use a background fabric to fill out the block to be square, and most of the time use sashing between the blocks.
Stack and Whack, OBW, and 4 patch posey (uses 4 squares to make a block) are variations of a Kaleidoscope quilt, which uses fabric repeats, turned at an angle, to make the block. |

If you read the Topic List heading for these types of quilt, you'll find a definition. The term 'Stack n Whack' is Bethany Reynold's trademark so can technically only be applied to her designs. OBW or One Block Wonder is a term used by Maxine Rosenthal in her books to described kaleidoscope quilts made only of either hexagons (6 equilateral triangles) or octogans (8 isoceles triangles each of 45 degrees) set edge to edge with NO sashing or setting solid fabric of any kind. Since yours is from a kit, I'd say it was a kaleidoscope, you could also call it 'stacked' stars. But I'd also call it 'beautiful'! :-D |
Stack and whack or kaleidoscope I think.

:)

I agree with calling it lovely!!
