I made this 6 sided star, I really like it. It is the first one I have ever made.
The problem I have is the center points are not there or is it suppose to be this way.
I do not have a pattern to follow I just sat down and decided to give it a try.
Please tell me how to fix this so that next time I make one it will be right.

Some days the lights are on but no one is home!!!! I got it loaded now.
I very precisly cut the diamonds and used 1/4in seam but I still managed to mess it up.

I think I am confused. Is this the layout before sewing? Order of assembly is important, I know. Accurate cutting is also critical, but more than that I don't know. I haven't had the courage to try one.

well... we've had the disappearing four patch, the disappearing nine patch, the disappearing pinwheel four patch, and now... the disappearing six-sided star. lol... couldn't resist. Thanks for the giggle.

Well, without being able to see it in person......from the 1st photo it *looks* like they are cut correctly. But in the second photo, with as much of the center point missing as there is, I suspect that your seam is more than a 1/4 inch (and/or that you got a pleat when you pressed?). When I first started quilting, I *assumed* that my presser foot was a 1/4 inch. Guess what??? - it wasn't! Have you tested your 1/4 inch seams? I have a tute on my website that shows you how:

I think you forgot to add 1/4 inch seam allows

I have my machine marked with masking tape at the 1/4 mark so all I have to do is butt the fabric against the tape and it stays even.

Hmmm, is it possible your needle position got moved accidentally? If I could see it in person I could probably help figure it out. But KY is kinda far from SD....oh, but is it warmed than 6 below zero there??? Maybe I could make a quick trip and stay until the spring thaw!!! LOL

Wouldn't these require y-seams to fit correctly?

yep you didn't add the 1/4 seam allowance- the middle shouldn't be meeting until it has been sewen- it looks like you cut the templetes on the sewing line instead of the cutting line- try it again only smaller- so you can control it better

hmmm, it just looks like you took too large of a seam allowance when stitching the two sections together. rip, rip,rip and do 1/4 seam. good luck, it looks great otherwise.

Did your first 2 seams cross each other 1/4 inch in from the edge? That is the only thing I can think of that would do this. You are not expecting this block to turn out a certain size so the extra for the seam allowance shouldn't matter at this point.

Other than the first 2 seams not in the right spot it looks like a large 1/4 inch seam on the final seam....

The masking tape is only good if you keep using the same fabric and
the same thread. Change one of these and it's a new game.
You might want to check your 1/4" seam allowance again.
AndiR did a very good tute on how do check that 1/4".
I do this every time I start a new project. Trust me, it's worth it.

Yes that's what I did. I don't do y seams. I'm gonna rip it apart and try it again.

When you sew your sets of three together the point made by the center one should be pretty close to 1/4 from the edge of the fabric of the two outside ones. The cut point on the center diamond will be a lot longer. Then when you sew them together it should come out all right. Take it apart and try again. With diamonds if you sewed the 1/4 from the point and not the side it will come out wonky. I found, when doing these for the first time, that it helped if I used a ruler and a washout marker and marked my 1/4" with a V or X at each point.

If I had to venture a guess, I'd say you cut on the sew line. Having never made one, I wouldn't know for sure...Maybe try again to make your diamonds, but add a 1/4". I'm thinking that your outside pieces on each half should meet at 1/4" from the end, and actually cross each other beyond that so that the points all meet together in the middle seam. I wonder if there is a block pattern online somewhere for this...now I have to look! lol

On your white diamonds it looks like you cut them in half to avoid doing a Y seam. When you did that you lost 1/2". So you either need to learn how to do a set in seam or you need to create half diamond templates which include your 1/4" seam allowance on all sides for your outside white diamonds.

Could you sew 3 sections together and then the other 3 sections together and then mate and sew one seam across to join? That should mate up the points.

when you get it apart, press your seams and take pics of the back, then when you sew it again if it isn't right, show us pics of the back, we'll getcha straightened out kid!

it looks like the star was small and the sa was too wide. measure and mark with a fine-line pencil, then cut three strips exactly 2". sew them long edges together. press and carefully measure across the strips. the final measurement should be exactly 5". if it's smaller, then your seam allowances are too wide and you need to make them narrower by sewing closer to the edge or adjusting your needle closer to the edge.

Can we see what the back looks like. Maybe by seeing your seam allowances someone else with have an idea of what went wrong.

Did you sew right to the end of the seam. I would suggest you stop 1/4 inch from the end. Hope this helps. Happy Quilting.

I can't I'm ripping it apart.

In fact I've only done one this way and that's how I did it. I was making a flower pincushion(the only one I did). Keep on trying and post more pics when you "fix" it!

Did you get your star sorted??

I will be ripping it apart today and working on it another time. I was frustrated so I iput it to the side.
