[quote=wvdek]Ok what is a sistwerp? Is that a lilttle sister who is a twerp? Never heard the term. /quote]

Yeah, that's exactly what a sistwerp is (in an affectionate way). I borrowed the phrase from the comic strip "For Better or Worse". That's what the brother called his little sister.

Silly me ....but what does OBW stand for ?!?!!? I really like this pattern ..your doing a beautiful job !!!!!

Hunnib 10-10-2009 09:28 AM

Just beautiful. I haven't done one of these yet but I have seen a lot of them and yours is beautiful. I look forward to you posting a picture of the finished quilt. I'm sure your sister will be thrilled.

O a funnier note, I had to chuckle when you mentioned something about thighs and plastic lawn chairs. My husband keeps a few of those outside his workshop and one collapsed a few weeks ago when one of his friends visited. He didn't get hurt thank goodness and they had a good laugh about it.

Mary, OBW stands for One Block Wonder. You take fabric and cut six pieces according to the pattern repeat, layer them so they are PRECISELY lined up according to the pattern (the book explains how), then cut strips, and then from the strips cut equilateral triangles. Then a block is made from six identical triangles. Each block is identical, but looks very different from the others. So, you have one fabric, one block, but a very interesting quilt! It's fun turning and rearranging the blocks to get different effects.

Those are beautiful. I love OBWs

OK, I've got a lot more to do, but I've done quite a few. I laid them out on the bed (big mistake) where they were immediately pounced on. I'll have to clear a floor space in the spare bedroom where they won't be disturbed!

We had a devil of a time keeping the animals away from the pieces, the landscape was on the table, the kitties loved it, we had to keep the garage closed up and the kitties out which was not easy to do my any means, then the next one had to go on the floor, and then the dogs had to stay out as well until we had them in at least strips and could be moved to the table, to see if we liked where the pieces were, I took a picture and printed it out and that way it was easier to see. being able to stand back to take a look is really hard and there is no holding it up to get a good look,

cutebuns 10-10-2009 11:01 PM

BTW, I forgot to add how great they are all looking. I love the look.

That's a great idea, Cutie, thanks!

cutebuns 10-10-2009 11:16 PM

It worked well with both the ones that I just did, as you are supposed to sort of blend from one color to another, it shows blocks that are glaringly in the wrong place, you don't have to print it photo quality or anything, I just used the lazer jet on normal paper, full sheet and went from there.

juneeloonee 10-11-2009 03:02 AM

OBW???? I know stack n' whack, but I don't know OBW? Oh By the Way? Obnoxious Building Whacked? Object Being Wrangled? Oh But Why?

(I really am serious, just having a little fun. Sometimes the abbreviations take me awhile to figure out. )

I love the blocks though. I am a big fan of stack n' whack in whatever form. One of my favorites right now is four patch posie that you make up any size according to the size of the material pattern you are working with. I should post some of mine....hmmm, another computer challenge!

Bevanger 10-11-2009 04:37 AM

obw = one block wonders

oooooooo the blocks are gorgeous :D

ranger 10-11-2009 04:40 AM

Those are gorgeous!!! The fabric is lovely.Would love to see your progress on this.

OBW--another thing I'd like to try.....never live long enough to try it all. (sigh)

Hey Juneeloonee (you'll be right at home with this group if your name fits! :P :P ) OBW is One Block Wonders. I've never heard of 4 patch posie. Tell me more! Please.

k3n 10-11-2009 05:28 AM

Gai I love the way that fabric is splitting into the blues, red/oranges and greens. It's going to be beautimous! And Tuffy looks like the cat that go the cream! :D

Ranger if you don't get to try them all, at least try this one! You will be so glad you did.

I have some 3D glasses that came with my grand daughters coloring book and I use the red side to see if something stands out where it shouldn't be too. I am lucky to have no inside pets so mine stays on the living room floor for a few days while I move blocks around. You can also use a flannel sheet under them and fold it up if you have to put them away for while. Most of them will stay in place.

I hope we get pics of the 4 Patch Posies soon. I have that pattern but still haven't made it. That might be just the thing for some fall leaves I'm about to cut for Dad.

Hunnib 10-11-2009 10:07 AM

These blocks really are "wonders" to behold. I just love looking at them!

sewsilly 10-11-2009 11:03 AM

I hadn't heard of four patch posie either, so I googled and found this slideshow...

Oh no, it looks like I need to add another project to my LONG list!

Jaynie 10-11-2009 02:18 PM

OMG Those are gorgeous!!!I have that fabric. I've done two OBW's but never thought of using that fabric.. Great job!

Instead of six layers, you have four. They are really simple as you can see from the pic.

gaigai ----l LOVE that fabric and it is making gorgeous blocks!!!!

amma 10-11-2009 08:00 PM

WOW    Those are ALL absolutely gorgeous!!! :D :D :D

juneeloonee 10-12-2009 02:40 AM

The ...loonee part fits too often I'm afraid.
The four patch posie is simply stacking four layers of material - pinning the same way you would any stack n whack - cutting strips of a specific width (anywhere from 1.5" to about 4.5" depending on the size of the fabric pattern) on the WOF; then cutting the strips into squares. And once you have your little stack of 4 identical pieces you get the fun of laying out and determining which pattern you like best because the four corners give you four options! This works best on a material that the repeatThey make wonderful centers to almost any block - log cabin, attic square, Ohio star, etc.
I usually don't go much bigger than 4.5" (which makes a 9" unfinished block) because the material pattern comes through too strongly and you start to lose the effect of what the cut can do.
Please feel free to ask any more questions as I may not have given the best instructions.
Enjoy!

juneeloonee 10-12-2009 02:43 AM

.....now maybe I should finish the part about the repeat on the four patch posie.....LOL
the repeat should be bigger than 12" and I have the most fun with those that are closer to 24" repeats!
Sorry I didn't finish my thought the first time!

k3n 10-12-2009 03:01 AM

Juneeloonee - thanks for that! I'm definitely going to give it a go. I've done the 6 repeat version but I like the idea of these as a centre to a block like a log cabin. Thanks for adding to my list! :?

They are beautiful!! I HAVE to do one of these OBW. So, the blocks are 6 triangles set together? I am trying to find the book, One Block Wonders Encore by Mavine Rosenthal in some of the used bookstore online. Then, I'm going to add "one more project started" to my list!

QUILTIN LADY 10-13-2009 09:40 AM

that is going to be so pretty cant wait to see it when it is done

From one Texan to another, I love your fabric choice. It is looking beautiful.

gaigai!!! When can we see some more of these beauties????

OK, I finally have all the blocks done, now I figure it's going to take me a LONG time to decide on a final pattern. I know that I'm going to change the layout a lot, and probably put the blue and red in the middle, with the yellows on the outside. But this is the first layout.

Initial layout, just to see how the blocks go together.

WOW WOW WOW :D :D :D That is gorgeous!!! You all have inspired me to make one, too!!! Bought the fabric, now to find the time :D :D :D Again WOW 8) 8) 8)

Thank you Amma. I was very surprised at how quickly the blocks went together. I actually think it's going to take longer to decide on a final layout than it did to sew the blocks.

My mother doesn't like it, BTW. She is very traditional. I hope my sister likes it.

amma 10-13-2009 11:49 AM

I bet she LOVES it!!! 8) 8) 8)

k3n 10-13-2009 12:06 PM

Gai ça c'est vachement fantastique!

Have you got a design wall? I guess not since they're laid out on the floor. Is there somewhere you could hang up a piece of batting or flannel to stick 'em on? That way you can fiddle around with them for a while til your happy without the Tuffster 'helping'. They look great already though, I have to say! But I can't resist fiddling around about a million times when I'm in the process.

Oh I wanna do another one!!!! But I HAVE to finish this darn door curtain - just been trimming up QST blocks - boooo-rrrrring! I'm about half way through 124 of the blighters!

gaigai 10-13-2009 12:14 PM

K, no, I don't have a design wall, but I worked hard to clear the floor in my spare bedroom, and that is where they are laid out. That way the brats can't get in and mess them up. They just sit outside the door and squall! LOL

I am definitely going to change the design, I'm just letting them "settle"!

billswife99 10-13-2009 12:24 PM

Now comes the fun part!

cutebuns 10-13-2009 03:58 PM

Great job, they are looking awesome! way to go Gai.

yeah, they go together pretty fast and now is the piddly part that you can take weeks on trying to decide. (just hope that once they are where you want them that they don't get messed up. )

Shemjo 10-13-2009 04:49 PM

That is sew pretty! I LOVE OBWs.

Love the cat enjoying them also!
