I don't think you need a border especially if you concerned it is going to then be too big. You could do a wider binding.

I think I would go with quilting that is curvy. A baptist fan would look quite appropritate for this or maybe clam shells.

Thanks everyone! I'm going with a red border; as it turned out it didn't fit where I wanted it to go even without the border, so I found a new spot for it. I'll post it when finished, but that won't be for a little bit.
