Well here it is; another cyber-dare.... It took me 15 minutes to turn the bag inside out, wash with laundry detergent and sun dry. Another 15 minutes assembling it, but I didn't measure anything, just cut and zig-zagged everything. It is permeated on the inside with a greasy residue, which has coated my sewing machine. It still smells. I challenge anyone else to this project. In my opinion, a complete waste of 30 minutes. If someone were to send me something in a recycled dog or cat food bag I would mark the package, "Refused. Return to Sender." It is that gross to me. I would be insulted.
I wondered about about the smell and residue also...
Thank you for letting us know how this didn't work out so well! |
It's cute though, even if it does stink,lol.....Michele
Wash it out with 409. Looks like a challenge from Project Runway..its way cute though.
Try turning it inside out again and dousing it with a degreaser. Use the hose on it and let sun dry...line with a garbage bag to prevent any leftover odors.....or just toss out....   better yet you can just use it to collect the "deposits" from the dog...
I wondered the same about my cat litter bags, they are the same kind of material. We go through two of those a month and it seems like there should be something we could do with the bags.
It's really cute, but the smell would bug me too. What a great way to recycle though!
Ahhhhhhh thats okay I'll take your word for it. It is cute and I am a dog freak but I think I'll make mine out of material.
Thanks for posting that. I won't waste my time. |
I don't like stinky things :|
Oh I think it is soooo cute!! I would use one! But I would use Dawn to get rid of the greasy feel and then you could seal the inside with a coat of spray polyurethyne.Once dry that will kill the smell. I love it!!
Scrappy cats, the cat litter bags would be okay, they wouldnt be greasy and they wouldnt stink!
The dog food bag sure is cute though! |

This would be a cute idea for other types of store bought bags that have advertising on them. I will have to think about what would work. |

I have plenty of old fabric I could use as cuter tote bags than advertising dog food. Rhonda, Aren't these bags multi layered? Could you take just the top (advertisement) and stitch that to fabric? Do you think that that would stink too? |
I know plastic you can put in the freezer to get rid of the odor, wonder if it would work for that too.. I like the bag, a neat idea.

I have plenty of old fabric I could use as cuter tote bags than advertising dog food. I buy Beneful by Purina for my dogs and I just looked. It has a tinfoil inside which is glued to a thin cardboard layer and the outer layer is the advertising and it is seperated from the cardboard/foil. So yes the one I have anyway could be seperated and reuse the advertising part. That would negate the idea of an easy to do project but it wouldn't be hard to do just take longer. The outer layer just smells like paper to me. So this one does't stink. She used OL Roy and that is a differant company so the bag is probably differant. |
Maybe there are just some things that are NOT meant to be recycle---- old underwear, used toothbrushes, and dog food bags. LOL
It is cute though. |

I buy cat and 2 kinds of dog food in bags like that. We just put trash in them.

That is so funny - I'm sorry to hear that it didn't turn out as you had hoped :'(
I save my dog food bags for when I need to do yard work and have to get rid of stuff. |

Gee Gran of 6 I thought the other thread was funny. I know my DH would love the bag you made--it would be easier to de-poop the yard with yours since it has handles LOL. That is the ultimate in recycling dog food bags.
Rhonda -- if you love advertising graphics, you would probably enjoy the current fabric grocery totes my local food store is selling fo 50 cents each! They feature mascots from cereal (i.e. Tony the Tiger, Toucan, etc).
Cute bag. Too bad about the smell. I was thumbing through the latest I think Better Homes and Gardens quilt magazine today and they showed a bag made from a dog food bag. I didn't read the article but maybe they had a clue on how to de-stink it.
I kind of liked the idea when I saw it in a magazine. I was wondering if you washed it really well and cut off the bottom part that has the heavy seams, it might take away the greasiness and smell. Personally I would just cut it long enough to have a cute picture of the dog, forget thee advertising. You could use it to carry your doggie's supplies on a trip or a picnic... Just a thought. I'm going to give it a try as soon as I have some extra time on my hands...LOL
Charcoal briskets takes odors out too. Put a small baggie (with holes) of them in the dog food bag (after it is clean) & let it set for a few days
Wash in vineager water to cut the grease.

I've done this with a couple of rice bags. Yes, we buy rice in 25 lb. sacks.
