It's the weekend and too windy and snowy to be outside playing with horses, so I got to sew!! :D :D

This sure took awhile. And I had to be very awake and focused to work on it or mistakes were too easy to make--which is why I didn't dare work on it through the week due to weariness after everything else was done.

I had to keep the seam ripper handy for several spots. The skinny border strips didn't fit, so I recut them and left them long and trimmed. I was worried about the outer borders, but they fit fine. Thank goodness. Not all the spots match up perfectly, but good enough!

If my daughter wants one for her dorm room next year, she gets the 2nd one, other wise it goes to a dear friend I've never met, but we're kindred spirits. (We meet this summer.)

The pictures show everything pretty good EXCEPT the outer border color--it's the richest blue green I've ever seen. It's a fabric by Blank Textiles and is so thick I often checked to see if I had two pieces. I love the stuff!!

The gray was a last minute decision and I'm so glad I added it. It makes the tree pop and tells a story of a vibrant fall tree on the brink of winter.... :D

Pam, it's 29.5 square. Amazingly--that's exactly what it's supposed to be. :D

I wish those top two leaves matched up!! Drats! I need the smiley that's pulling her hair out.

I think I can quilt this one.

Now I have another pile of triangles to sew for some future project....

Someone earlier asked how it was done--I took a few pictures to show that before I sewed the first two squares...here they are...I'll number them because they never come in order....

Step 1 This is a block 1 and a block 2. Block two has a diagonal line drawn on the back

Step 3 I folded it back to see how it should look once it's sewed, trimmed and ironed.

Step 2 Then block 2 is placed over block one and ti's sewed on the diagonal line...

Good grief! The pictures above came in the worse order!! Grr.

Oh well--here's what it looked like once all the blocks were sewed, trimmed, and ironed.

And another before the last border was added.

Ah, Barnbum! Another job well done. Beautiful tree reminds me of fall around here. (Not that I'm not looking forward to Spring and Summer so I can get out in the sun and simmer awhile.) But the fall season is the most beautiful time of the year. (If it would only stay around 75 or 80 degrees.)

patricej 03-02-2008 03:38 AM

just gorgeous!!! so rich and colorful. such precise piecing.

when are you giving us another class? we want more!!!

Rebecca Chambley 03-02-2008 04:19 AM

STUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

barnbum 03-02-2008 05:35 AM

No more classes, Patrice. I'm not ready to tell folks how to do anything. Someone was curious as to how the heck it was made--as was I when I first saw it. So I snapped a few photos along the way. Same as most quilts--just follow the directions and use seam ripper as needed. :D

My daughter said she doesn't think it'll work in a dorm room, but she wants one for her apartment when dorm rooms are history. I'll work up a whole 4 seasons for her when the times comes. I have a year or two. So...I think my friend is going to be happy when this arrives in her mailbox.

I'm going to get a better picture of the outer border color--you gals have got to see it.

Can you see the border color any better here? I think it's the blue in it that won't pick up.... my husband held it in the sunlite kitchen for me--didn't show it. So I put it on the clothesline, but it was just breezy enough to make it difficult. I held the corner to try to get a photo.

PS I've learned my lesson about leaving unfinished quilt tops on the line in the wind--it unravels the sides enough to mandate a trim--and then everything's off..... ugh. As soon as I remembered that important fact, I took it down.

Pam Pollock 03-02-2008 09:25 AM

Barnbum, That is a nice size for a wall hanging. Again, I really love your block & the colors you used. That green is just gorgeous!! It's nice to find a really nice green. Those colors are all so nice together. Where did you get the pattern?

henryparrish76 03-02-2008 09:26 AM

It is awesome! Great work!

barnbum 03-02-2008 10:28 AM

Thanks again for your kind comments.

Pam, it's from a book called "Big-Block Quilts by Magic" by Nancy Johnson-Srebro.

I had received a gift certificate at Christmas from a student for Borders (the class gave me $75 to Tractor Supply --wasn't that enough?? ), and I always get quilt stuff with those (since it's a 100% need, vs want issue--TS is need). I wanted to try making smaller sized projects to be able to quilt them myself--so this book appealed to me. The cover say "30 projects from squares and rectangles...features easy and accurate diamond-free technique--14 bonus quilting designs."

She wasn't kidding, eh?

Pam Pollock 03-02-2008 10:48 AM

Thanks! I made a note of the title & author & will look at the book if I can find one. Very nice block!

MissTreated 03-02-2008 11:43 AM

Truly a beautiful quit. Your taste in colors is as close to perfect as you get. You must have a color wheel in your minds eye. Your work is awsome. Your gracious, kind, and a darn good quilter. Some people have it all...........

sandpat 03-02-2008 03:53 PM

Great job Barn! That went together so quickly and smoothly! (easy for me to say right??) Thanks for the pic & book title. It is a little above my level right now I think, but someday. Yours turned out really nice...I'll send you my addy...if you are looking for someone to mail things too
