What happened Henry??? hmmm, i've never done a lone star, have thought about it, and then thought, no, too hard lol, hmmm, is it supposed to have 8 points? or 6? The fabrics are so pretty, do you have any idea where it went wrong?

I think 8. I have no idea. When I realized 8 wasnt going to work i tried just making one with 6 points, failed at that too and just threw my hands up in disgust after ripping and resewing 4 times.

I need help with this block.

Barb M 01-07-2009 09:14 PM

i think you must have cut at the wrong angles maybe? Help is on the way! :) Even though i've never done one, take a look at this, and it might be helpful :)

Definately a woops.
Back to the drawing board. We have faith in you. Next time will be better.
Can't help either, never attempted one.

Barb M 01-07-2009 09:44 PM

You know Henry, when i look at it, your diamonds almost look more like 60 degree angles, that would be used for a 6 point start. Did you try making all 6 of them, and just laying them out before sewing them? I really think you can make it work as a 6 point star if you just undo it and lay it out, and take a good look at it, here's hoping for you :)

Barb M 01-07-2009 09:50 PM

Here is an interesting one you might like to try, it's called Sun Star:

The post that was given by Barb M is the best....that is how I did my stars and they are hard.....make sure you starch your fabric before cutting....I starched like 4 or 5 times....it could almost stand on its own I couldn't tell you what is going on with your star.....Good Luck....

patricej 01-07-2009 10:52 PM

i also think those look like diamonds for a 6-point star. you ... ummm ... have 7?

get large pieces of paper and draw 60 degree diamonds on them that are larger than your pieced diamonds and all the same size. stick the pieced diamonds in the middle of the drawn diamonds. using the paper diamonds as your foundation, add narrow borders to the pieced start until they are all the same size. sew them together for a new star.

machine applique that star to a pillow background.

start fresh on new stars for your quilt. something learned ... nothing wasted.

Barb M 01-07-2009 11:37 PM

Wow, now that's an excellent idea Patrice!!! And the new borders will help get rid of any inacuracies...good on you Patrice :) :) :)

Well Henry that looks like a butterfly! make it into a quilt anyway what ta heck an original by Henry!!

Moonpi 01-08-2009 03:45 AM

I think the butterfly idea is great. Some patterns just don't worl out in odd numbers. I do lone stars by making rows, then cutting, to get away from working with wiggly biases. Starching it into submission works well for this pattern, too.

There is a quilt-in-a-day book out there somewhere that I learned the method from ages ago.

sewnsewer2 01-08-2009 04:10 AM

Henry, try making your strips a little narrower or wider. I had a rough time when I did mine too, that why I wrote the tute, so I would remember. I have a problem with CRS sometimes.

Knot Sew 01-08-2009 05:09 AM

These look as if there was a center missing.

mary quite contrary 01-08-2009 05:42 AM

You made me smile. My first reaction was Oh my.

There's a reason I haven't tried one of them. I applaud your efforts. I'm sure you will end with something fantastic.

Marcia 01-08-2009 05:46 AM

Well, Henry, I have to say that it is a noble attempt. We do not know what we can do until we try---and at least you are trying!! More than I can say for myself! I understand your frustration, but take the hints and pointers from your friends here and remember----if at first you don't succeed, try, try again! Good luck and keep us posted! :D

hmmmm.........

that too has possibilities.

I could just call it Henry's Interpretation of a Butterfly block....LOL :):)

sewnsewer2 01-08-2009 07:13 AM

Henry how wide are your strips? I made mine 2-1/2" wide and cut them at a 45 degree angle.

bearpaw 01-08-2009 01:20 PM

Well, although it isn't a lone star, it is kind of interesting. I bet you could salvage it into something else. You could cut the points off and make a square or rectangle, then put some other blocks around it.

LindaR 01-09-2009 07:03 AM

you plain diamonds need to be the same size as the pieced ones.....try that and see if it lays flatter....

mimisharon 01-09-2009 08:01 AM

To pretty fabric choices to just give up. Make it work into a wall hanging, with other blocks around it...a pillow top....a pot holder...don't you throw that away, Sug!

When I'm piecing stars I can't have anything else on my mind but the block cutting. I have close my ears, my mind to everything but the block.

I agree whoever said to lay out the pieces on your small planning board first. These intricate designs have to be laid out beside my machine to keep my attention focused.

Hugs, Henry, you'll get it, you've to much talent not to.

Eleanor Burns has a book on lone stars makes it very easy that is how I did mine and got the book at Joanns with 40 % off coupon hope you can find one

shellyp 01-09-2009 03:14 PM

It looks like your really close to having it! At least you are brave enough to try. I love the lone star but just dont have the nerve to do it yet. Keep going Henry!!! You'll get it!!!!

MsSage 01-09-2009 03:51 PM

WOW you did good I would HATE to see mine LOL :?
You can always walk away for a couple days and come back with a fresh mind and I am sure it will be lovely.

Patty44 01-09-2009 05:03 PM

I tried to make the lone star once too, well the first time it turned out good,I made it for another lady, then i tried to make me one and I messed it up. It was a log cabin witht he lone star in the middle. Everything is all done, all the log cabin blocks, but the star poofed up in the middle,it wouldn't lay flat,so took it apart re done it still wouldn't lay flat. so I don't know I may just have to cut out another one and try it agin.I have taken it apart so many times that I think it may be streched out now.I luckly do have enough to make another star to match.

I may have been over confident since the first one I made was good.

Feathers 01-12-2009 12:13 PM

It looks like the white block should extend up to make the 8th point. It looks like it may have gotten lopped off on accident. Then I think it needs one more full point in the cream color that is sewn between the two prints to the right of the lopped off point. I think you need 8 points. It all looks like it would be VERY easy to fix unless you HATE HATE HATE ripping out!

quiltsRfun 01-12-2009 12:34 PM

Maybe you invented a new design--the Henry Star. LOL

Kyiav10 01-12-2009 06:58 PM

Try and try again. I have not attempted a lone star yet as I still think it is way out of my league. Maybe in a coulpe years when I get some of my UFO's finished.
