You don't have to worry about 'colours' just how much they contrast together, so just think small..this is made with 4 patches and Half Squared Triangles. Concentrate on creating as much contrast between the lights and darks as you can. I used a whole range of fabrics and designs, didn't give a hoot what they were as long as they stood out from each other. When I put the 4 patches and HST's together in a block, I made sure I had a couple of brights included for a good overall mix when the quilt was put together.

Just focus on the small parts of the quilt and the overall design will blend all on it's own..trust me!!

Making this quilt has shown me just what you can do with what is to hand Dragonfly, I am not in a position to buy designer fabrics for a specific pattern, as I have built my stash up from recycled clothing and bargains on ebay, all hotch potch mostly. So if I can do it then you surely can

Izy, that is an awesome quilt. Scrappy is my very favorite color scheme! I figure if you use enough different fabrics, then you don't have to worry about whether or not it's the right "style" of fabric. The overall effect is fantastic! Thanks for sharing this with us at the Quilting Board. (Don't think I've seen a post with 25 pages of responses before--a sure sign you did a fine thing!) Keep up the good work.

Kas 09-20-2011 01:18 PM

Wow! That is very pretty! And what a lot of triangles. I think I would be pulling my hair out before I got half done!

Oh bless you Liz, I am rather proud of this one and everything you say I discovered to be true while making this quilt! Thanks!

Well I did it the easy way by stitching two squares together, draw a line diagonally the stitching 1/4" away from line down both sides, cut in half THEN trimmed up to make sure they were perfectly square and after a while...made sure the diagonal seam goes straight into each corner...not even a smidging off or they won't line up! (ask me how I know that??? ) So you see...practice makes perfect, which, by the way, a lot of mine aren't!! ;)

Thank you for your lovely comment!

That sounds easy enough! I'm anxious to give this a try but not until I finish a project for my seven grandchildren (a jean quilt for each of them! Never again!! What a project!) On a good note, I'm adding lots and lots to my stash!!!!!!!! Thanks for your encouragement, Izy :D

Love the Jacob's ladder. I had never done one and tried to copy yours with my scraps. I think it will be great if and when I ever finish it. I really love your border. I must admit I had to do some ripping to get things going the right direction. My wrist is still in a cast so I am doing lots of little projects but not up to dragging around a larger quilt or gripping enough for FMQ - that may be a while. I have done some Christmas blocks and table toppers. Also started enough UFOs and WIPs to last a while!!

Well done, especially as you are hindered by a cast! I hope you post pictures of your latest projects soon!

Fabulous! How bright and pretty without being too busy! Great job!

Love your quilt. So bright, scrappy, and cheery.

Nice sunroom. Can you use it year round or seasonal? I love all the light. If I had a room like that, I would never come out.

Thanks again everyone!

Yes Wvdek, we use this room ALL the time, it overlooks our garden and there is central heating in there so we keep nice and warm, even when the snow is thick on the ground!

From your posting of your gorgeous quilt, I'm now inspired to make a Scrapy Jacob's Ladder quilt too.

I love the quilting that you did on this quilt. Simple (not overly heavy quilting) without over powering the beauty of the quilt pattern

The Jacob's ladder I have seen before has 4 patches in all 4 corners. This is much more interesting. Thanks for sharing it.

Yes, when I was playing around with layouts, I tried the traditional way but thought it boring where all 4 4patches met...so swapped two for HST's which create the hour glass block/diamonds..much better I think too!

Thanks everyone for your comments, I am so pleased how many responses this has received!
