I think for sure this is in my future! Is the finished size of your blocks 10"? Thanks for your response!! Love love it the way it sparkles...

I started with 2inch squares as my leader and enders. Took almost a year because I quilt more than I piece. (I'm a longarmer) I stitched 4 dryer sheets together and trimmed them to 10 1/2 inch squares. My 2inch blocks were made in lengths of 10 squares. I added a 1inch strip of black on either side of the leader and ender strip sewn on the diagonal of the dryer sheet. Then I randomly stitched strips of various sizes in shades of blue to both sides ending with black on both sides. After all was done I trimmed down to 10 inch finished squares. The quilting was done edge to edge using a variegated thread.

I love the serenity of all the blues together, surrounded by the bright leaders and enders. Beautiful work.

Quilt is adorable!

Gorgeous quilt!

Beautiful! This is my favorite string quilt!

Thank you for the links to the Bonnie Hunter info - for some reason they kept taking me to what looked like a website for an elementary school teacher! I gave up on the search for awhile until my quilting buddy pointed me into another direction.

cfuzzy 10-19-2019 02:53 PM

Love the way you made this string quilt. Beautiful!

Sewnbyme4u - I was wondering... would you suggest that we start with “Adventures With Leaders and Enders” by Bonnie Hunter to learn the method?

I just could not get your beautiful, glowing quilt out of my mind last night!

Another question... is this particular quilt “pattern” shown in any of Bonnie Hunter’s books - or was your actual version something you put together on your own? (If it is something of your own imagination, i’m sure that Bonnie Hunter would love to see it!)

Here is the link that explains Leaders and Enders on Bonnie's blog... https://quiltville.com/leadersenderspf.html This is just a pattern I came up with to use up some of the strings of leaders and enders I had made during the course of a year or so...if you look back in the comments you will see my explanation of how I made the squares. Look close at the quilt.....the little twinkling squares are NOT sashings. They are placed diagonally on each square. When the squares are sewn together they form what appears to be sashings around the blue and black blocks. I hope this makes sense.

Very nice, love the depth it shows; looks so 3D...

That is a beautiful quilt!! Glad others asked about leaders and enders and then some nice folks posted a link to it.
Not sure if I will ever do one, but gladly dream about it.

Beautiful quilt! Thank you for your how-to description. I went back to look at it again and finally "see" the pattern.

Thanks again!

That is stunning! It's a great use of "controlled scrappy" and looks like it has lights shining from it. Beautiful!

Came late to this party and your photo has disappeared. Sure would like to see it as blue is one of my favorite colors and I have heaps of it in my stash.

Love the colors in this one

It’s showing now and it is beautiful, thanks. Something I could actually do even though I don’t do the leader/ender thing anymore.

Absolutely beautiful quilt!

So excited! Was determined to keep going back to your photo until i could finally * see *the actual block! Hey, i think i can do this now that i “get” the actual block (sometimes i just have to challenge myself to think outta the box)!

Thank you so much, sewnbyme4u! Now i’m * really * excited because doing your quilt in purples has been on my mind ever since you posted your gorgeous quilt in blues. I only hope mine will be half as successful as yours 😊

So, just to confirm... i am actually seeing a “string-pieced” type of block, right? If i am understanding it correctly, the “leaders and enders” strip is first up on the block applied diagonally - then all of your blues are applied either side of that center strip, working out to the edges on both sides. Then you square up? Do i have the right understanding of the concept now?

If so, i gotta start working on those Leaders & Enders - although i might just have to subvert the intended plan there and commit myself to making Leaders & Enders * only * until i have enough to start the quilt! I know, my plan is kinda backwards 😊 (on the same order as “let’s have a quilt show so we can have vendors!”) but then if it accomplishes the intended purpose i will be happy! Glad there are no Quilt Police here!

Look at my quilt once more.....so far you are off to the right start. Just some notes.....the squares are cut at 2 inches, I cut 1 inch strips of black and sewed them to both sides of the leader and ender strip. I also finished both ends of the block with black. The only measurements that are the same is the width of the center strip and the black strips that are on both sides.

Very nice!
It glows!

Thank you, sewnbyme4u... now that you mention it - i did miss a couple steps with the black strips and black blocks. Thank u for setting me straight! 😊
