 I just had to try twistedstitcher's fabric bags.

After the first one, I made it a little bit taller, adjusted the pocket and I changed the bottom. I didn't like the bulk of the corners folded in so I cut a square out in the corner and used a french seam. These are just cotton out of my stash....they seem heavy enough since they are lined. I think my SILs will like these for Christmas. I need to make one for DM and then the girls are done.
I tried another pattern too but made the bottom different. I wonder why I can't just follow directions without modifying them....it has always been that way for me. And noted on my school report cards. "Does not follow directions"

Thanks twistedstitcher!!

Ya'll are soooo fast! And the results look great too! I'm thinking that your folks will love those for Christmas. I'm still wondering how you do things so quickly (although I did admit to DH that he should be glad that I'm a SLOW quilter  )

I know I couldn't just pull from my stash and they would look as nice together as your colors do.

Izy 12-14-2008 06:56 AM

Wow how cool are they....this project is on my list...quite near the top now!! :D

beachlady 12-14-2008 09:12 AM

I still am not sure I understand the directions of the bag, so may make modifications too. I am such a visual person.

I like the idea of adding a notepad and pen - thanks for that idea Ruth.

I am slow too Sandpat - or get distracted.

sewjoyce 12-14-2008 09:14 AM

Very nice! I love the colors!! (Have you made any for yourself yet?

sewsewquilter 12-14-2008 11:34 AM

Those turned out great! Sometimes it's more fun to not follow the rules. :D

Knot Sew 12-14-2008 12:23 PM

OK I have one finished..... For groceries I would add 6 to 8 inches in length. I would also make a paper patters as the plactic slips where it is folded. I have some red Hello Kitty Fabric And will try to make the grandaughters one. I think after the first one these will go faster cause i won't have to run to the computer......I will try to get a picture :D

tlrnhi 12-14-2008 12:48 PM

Great job!

mamatobugboo 12-14-2008 01:02 PM

great! I would love to try them!

twistedstitcher 12-14-2008 01:51 PM

Your bags are beautiful....love your fabrics! I wasn't wild about the bulk at the bottom either (nor was my sewing machine!) Could you explain a little more how you modified the bottom?

Chele 12-14-2008 03:38 PM

Those are great! I think "adjusting" patterns is your creative mind at work.

2 Doods 12-14-2008 04:49 PM

I'm happy to hear you like these. They are fun to make! And since my sis-in-laws do not live near each other it doesn't matter that they all get the same thing  Here are some of the modifications that I made:

The striped bag from my first post is made from this pattern:

http://unabashed.wordpress.com/make-...e-grocery-bag/

I would make it a bit taller next time. Once you cut the holes for the handles you lose bag space. I cut my bottom corners 4" and that made a large box bottom. I am making one for my mom now that I cut 24 inches. I am going to cut the corners 3 1/2". I cut the handles 5x2. I'll let you know how it comes out. I like that it is reversable. Flowers for Mom and a plain side in case Dad has to go shopping. I am adding a pocket too.

The pattern for the flowered bags in the post has you fold the corners and stitch it all together. Very bulky....I changed after the first one to make the bottoms cut like the striped bag. (See link.) Her pictures are very clear.

I cut my corner squares 3 1/2". (Just to make the bottom a little larger.)
I sewed the center seam at the bottom as a french seam first. Then the two corners-also in a french seam. You end up with a little ridge of fabric inside the bag but not the bulk of all the folded fabric. I also moved my pocket up and cut it about 7 inches wide instead of 6. The top of the pocket is 6" below the top edge of the bag and is stitched along the bottom of the pocket instead of being sewn into the bottom seam of the bag. The bag will still fold into the pocket but if there is stuff in the pocket it does not end up under the bag's bottom.

These bags go together very quickly once you figure out what size adjustments you prefer. Give it a try. Oh and if you cut it just a smidge narrower you can get the front and back from one length of fabric. Less scrap and saves $$. I used narrow seams to make up some of the difference. I also double stitched the seams and backstitched corners for strength.

If I had a fun machine that did decorative stitches I would do that at the top of the pocket. Oh! Santa......I need a fun machine!
I'm anxious to see what all of you make. Post your pictures.

Thanks for the information! I think I'll still use the same pattern I originally used but modify the bottom like you did, it sounds like it would be much neater and easier to sew.

3incollege 12-14-2008 05:09 PM

I wish I had time to make a few bags for christmas gifts. i love the fabric.
Is it cordaroy? nice job

barnbum 12-14-2008 05:37 PM

Just cotton out of my stash. You could do it in cordaroy especially if you used a serger. Cordaroy frays so easily. Double stitch for sure!

I like the handles on "your" pattern better too. And if you do the bottom similar to the other pattern you get the best of both.

Here is Mom's bag that I mentioned earlier. I think it will be handy for her shopping. I like the handles on twistedstitcher's version better and it goes together faster. But this one is reversable and I think my mom will like that.

Just a tad larger than the paper version.

A little plainer in case Dad has to use it.
