A super nice couple--a 3rd grade teacher with the most beautiful singing voice and the orchestra instructor (see fabric choices  )--just started their family with twins! I have never made quilts for babies born to school folks (not enough time!) but I really wanted to welcome this wee pair with something.

I searched magazine for patterns that would work with black and whites with splashes and found this idea in McCall's Quilting Jan/Feb 2011, pg 28, Across the Spectrum. I just changed everything about the color.

Binding will be green. Backs will be kid prints--one with cats because the parents love them. I will get them sandwiched soon, but I can never "see" the quilting, so I need your vision. Remember, I'm a novice quilter, some stippple, echo, sitd, and there's one flower I can do. So go easy on me.

Also should white thread be used in the b+w blocks and a variegated primary in the others? Please give me your ideas on that too. :-D Thank you!!!

Ava's--not a great photo color wise.

Close ups so you can "see" the quilting!

They are beautiful Karla.
Well, the quilting part is not my strong point.
You could do an all over free motion meander in the variegated thread.
You could also come across the diagonals with a wavy or curvy type stitch from your machine, again in the primary variegated thread.

Ooo--I didn't think about using different stitches... cool idea. Do you mean follow the angles created--the rhombus lines?

I have a favorite stitch I love to use on my machine. In fact I will be starting to quilt a baby quilt here in a few using that stitch again. Let me see if I can find a picture to tell you what I mean

See the "loopy" stitch coming off the inside corner. It is a stitch my machine has that I just reverse every other stitch.

I think you could just do a simple stipple and just leave the colored chain alone.....it will make it pop out..Looks great!

Oh yes--that's a neat stitch! Thanks for the photo!

I can do stipples.. In the original pattern those chains show up so nicely, but the fabrics I used are too busy and the effect is lost, so I'd like to help them pop.
