These are Christmas gifts. They have magnetic closers and two pockets inside. I made bottoms for the bags with covered plastic mats. Thanks for looking!

Hmmm, i have some selvages saved. not sure how long they are but this a great thought! love the bags!!!

oksewglad 11-29-2018 02:44 PM

These sure are cute!
I just made a few selvage projects, too...10 chickens--used those short pieces up quickly. I also made a couple of "garbage" cans with them. I pressed some HeatNBond Lite to the foundation fabric before sewing the selvages. It gave extra body to the fabric. Have you tried that?

sewingsuz 11-29-2018 03:03 PM

I made a couple more that I used fusible fleese and that worked better then batting. The batting distored the square i started with so I will not use that again. I did not fuse the fleese to the fabric but I maybe should have use that side to sew the fabric on. The second ones I had to square up the sides before I went any further. What foundation did you use?

Cute bags!

Oh, those turned out really cute!

Ariannaquilts 11-29-2018 05:28 PM

Cute bags, when you use the fusible fleece and iron it on it gives the bag more stability. I only use fleece in my totes, and woven fusible in regular bags. That's just me though!

Daylesewblessed 11-29-2018 06:42 PM

That looks like such a fun project!

I fused the HNB to the wrong side of a cotton fabric. I sewed the selvages on the diagonal to the fusible side (wrong) side. I did not press until I was done with the piece. I decided to do this in case I happened to sew too close to the fabric edge of the selvage and get a pull out. If I wanted a fluffier piece I think I would attach the strips on the fusible side of the fleece...good idea to use the fusible IMHO. I did not use HNB in the chickens...only a piece of scrap muslin.

Also...my very first strip is not a selvage piece...I use a regular strip of fabric at least 1 1/4" (could go wider) wide then I sewed my first selvage strip down. Most of my selvages are narrower than the ones in your bag, too.

Those are gorgeous and so creative. I need to be on your Christmas List. :)

Jingle 11-29-2018 08:07 PM

Very pretty purses.

copycat 11-30-2018 04:08 AM

Thanks for showing us your lovely selvage bags! Are you using the sew and flip method?

Lay first selvage right side up and the second strip right side down over the first one and sew along one edge...open the strips and continue placing strips along one edge to sew and flip?

Homespun 11-30-2018 05:32 AM

very nice purses.

No..I lay fabric right side up then overlap the selvage edge of the next strip and top stitch on the selvage edge making sure I have enough of the first fabric underneath..say a quarter of an inch.

Love your purses! Great Christmas gift - wouldn't mind getting one!

sJens 11-30-2018 11:29 AM

Cute bags--perfect pattern for quilt as you go.

BSKTLOFR-QUILTER 11-30-2018 01:44 PM

Good job on the bags. I wish I had the tenacity to collect the salvage edges and do something with them. Keeping scraps organized is the best I can do. These are very nice.

Mariposa 11-30-2018 01:50 PM

Great bags! Your hooks are fun too! :)

jlt37869 11-30-2018 05:49 PM

quiltlady1941 11-30-2018 09:24 PM

Oh how cute is that! I love them great job..

audsgirl 11-30-2018 10:15 PM

Suzanne, these are great uses for selvages. I don't know if I would ever save up enough of them to make a quilt, but something like this is very doable. Nicely done!

these bags are terrific! I've been saving salvage for years....but never saw anything I wanted to do with it until now! Thanks for the inspiration!

Onetomatoplant 12-01-2018 06:30 AM

Super cute! I’ve been saving selvages, waiting for the perfect project. I’m thinking tote bag. And I saw a sewing machine cover, so there’s that. But now I love your purses! Sew many choices...

Boston1954 12-01-2018 07:22 AM

GREAT BAGS! We used to throw selvages away....now we make great gifts...bags, pot holders, I wonder if we could to rag rugs.....or maybe the no stretch or give in the selvages would not work on some things.....oh well, guess we need to test our ideas. Happy holidays!

kittiebug 12-03-2018 01:22 AM

very nice bags , so cute .

Sallybear6 12-03-2018 06:43 AM

They are adorable!

luvstoquilt 12-03-2018 03:18 PM

Nice bags. I bet some ladies are going to be really happy.

SusieQOH 12-03-2018 06:14 PM

Someone is going to love those adorable bags!

sewingsuz 12-04-2018 06:09 PM

I do it like oksewgal described.

sewingsuz 12-04-2018 06:20 PM

Thanks everyone and I hop my daughter and granddaughter and Mother like them. I put pockets inside on them and on top side of the pockets I sewed another piece of different fabric than the lining so you know exactly were the pocket is. My Mother is 103 yrs old and her eyes are not good. The rest of her is pretty good for her age. I hope I can be that good if I live that long. She lives in assistant living However as long as she is with us I bring her to my house for holidays.

nwm50 12-05-2018 07:20 AM

I have lots of selvages but not sure how much is long enough!
Yours are really pretty!

oksewglad 12-05-2018 10:09 AM

nwm50..I think 12-15" would be long enough to make sewingsuz's bags. This is the tutorial I have used for my selvage chickens. One only needs the length of the square so makes use of the short pieces. My chicks started with 3.5" and 4.5" squares. Both sizes work well.

I'm hoping to make this pattern someday, using a depression green for the solid fabric.
