My FIL was a pastor for 52 years. As his health declined, he couldn't pastor any more, and we all thought his ministry days were over. He met Pastor Jerry Walls in Warner Robins, GA, and Pastor Walls eventually asked him to come on staff at Southside Baptist Church as the Minister to Senior Adults. This was not a full-time job, and it was something that his health and schedule would allow him to do. He spent the last several years doing that work, and it was fulfilling for him, and the Senior Saints loved him and my MIL.

This spring my FIL had to have surgery, and it went badly. His health deteriorated for several weeks, and he passed away on July 12. Pastor Walls came to visit him daily, and the church was a huge help to my wife's family. Pastor Walls helped us plan the funeral, and has followed up faithfully with my MIL.

While my FIL was in the hospital, the quilt we made him was usually on him, but was never more than a few feet away. Pastor Walls admired it several times, and commented that the only thing wrong with it was that it was made with LSU fabrics. My wife and I decided to thank him by making him a quilt that he would enjoy. We wouldn't have bought Alabama fabric otherwise.

We cannot adequately thank this man for everything he has done, but hopefully a quilt will be a small down payment. We are planning a trip in a couple of weeks to spend the weekend with my MIL, so we plan to give it to him then.

Thanks for looking,

Darren

Picture of almost all of the quilt. It measures 49 by 77.

We used leftovers to piece the back, and we love how it turned out.

Very nice quilt! What a thoughtful gift also. I really like the simplicity of the blocks. My almost son-n-law is an Alabama fan and I've wanted to make him a quilt for quite some time. I have the fabrics but have had problems deciding on block patterns. If you cut the pieces too small, lots of the AL stuff is not shown to advantage. I can see now that all the blocks I have been looking at were just too many pieces. I'm thinking maybe bigger snowball blocks with the 4 patch and 1 or 2 other blocks will work nicely. Thanks for sharing your story and posting the pictures.
