USA Map Quilt (~30 hours)
1 Attachment(s)
This will be part of a double sided quilt. I want to have another map on the other side that will have each state's name personalized. Now I just need to get a fat quarter of every state (maybe 1/2 yd for Texas)!
The continental portion measures ~32" x 50" |
So pretty! I was thinking of doing something just like this, after seeing wall art in a very recent clothing catalog! The page of the catalog featuring the calico map has been torn out and I have put it on my idea board in my sewing room.
Did you use a classroom sized map for the state shapes? I love your great fabrics. |
What a novel idea. Looking forward to seeing the end result.
I love that! I have always wanted to do one of those but am intimidated. Any hints and tips?
Very interesting idea.
Very nice! I am anxious to see the other side! I too wondered how you designed it.
I like what I see so far. A teachers' supply store will have good outline maps.
That looks so interesting. Please share the final result with us!

I used the following tutorial. The step by step directions were very easy to follow. Only I sewed on the states using a scant 1/8th of an inch instead of 1/4". Also the background fabric is light blue with my map!

Awesome map quilt Orangeroom. Thank you so much for posting it for your chatroom friends to see.
that is really cute!!!
Love that! Never would have thought of doing that. Love it!
This is so special. On the wall of a major State Park in Guntersville, Alabama, they have a quilt with the counties done similar to this. You did fantastic.
You put a lot of thought into your fabric selection: Tx looks hot, Va looks green, Utah is gridded out like the streets, new mexico has hot tamales, I could go on and on. ...Just saying, I noticed!
What a creative idea!!
That is great.
Very well done!
I love it! Where would I find a fat quarter of every state's fabric?
Great idea. Thanks for the link, too.
Great quilt! Now I want to do one. Thanks for the link--I bookmarked it.
Just love it.

What a wonderful piece! We must be on the same wave length for so many of us have thought of doing a map. I bought a piece of fabric that has the states and the name of the capitols on each one. I figured I would make my niece something with it since she is in grade school still.
I am really looking forward to seeing what the other side will look like. |

Alaska is the largest state in the United States in land area at 663,268 square miles (1,717,856 km[SUP]2[/SUP]), over twice the size of Texas, the next largest state. Alaska is larger than all but 18 sovereign countries. Counting territorial waters, Alaska is larger than the combined area of the next three largest states: Texas, California, and Montana. It is also larger than the combined area of the 22 smallest U.S. states

Soooo if Texas gets a 1/2 yard, then Alaska gets over 1 yard. Lol...
ohhh I love this ! Great job Orange kid !
Love, love, love this!
That is beautiful!
That is fantastic!!! My daughter taught 5th grade this year and the students have to memorize where the states are and the capital city. (Since I graded most of those tests, I am pretty good now.) But many years ago I had planned to embroider a quilt with the states' flowers and birds. I still have the iron-on pattern, but never made it. If anyone is interested, I would be happy to send it to them. I just need to find it.
Great job! Can't wait to see the flip side! And thank you for sharing the link to the tutorial. Love it!
Boy - so creative. Great work.

I love it from the teacher's perspective for sure. But it is sooooo accurate looking...great job. If you want something "Texan" like bluebonnets or something of that ilk, I'd be happy to send you something...just PM me.
