This post came about from a thread on the main section that talks about using 20% of your machine. I made these quilts right after I bought my Bernina 440. I wanted to see what the decorative stitches look like in real life. I simply chose fabrics in the same color family, sort of like a crazy quilt but not using any pattern. I quilted on the edge of each seam using a different stitch for each one. I started at the beginning of the lineup and just changed to the next stitch when I changed to a new seam.

Love the quilts, great job, and it is so true that alot of us don't use our machines to their full potential, I hope to change that in 2011....So many new things I want to work at in the new year

craftybear 11-23-2010 10:31 PM

that is cool and love the way to show all of your decorative stitches on one piece of quilt

MomtoBostonTerriers 11-23-2010 10:48 PM

These quilts are TOO cute! Love the colors, love the decorative stitches. Thanks for the ideas; I am going to try out your idea with my own Bernina 440.

The next quilt I am going to make for my sister I plan on using my decorative stitches. Thanks for sharing. Glad it works out and the quilts are gorgeous!

That is a great idea. I definitely need to make better use of my machine! I do on occasion use the decorative stitches but not nearly as much as I could!! Thanks for reminding all of us to do that!

Very pretty!!

clem55 11-24-2010 05:36 AM

wondering if you can use a walking foot with the decorative stitches? I love your idea, and the two quilts are darling.

I just got a new machine and was making placemats for gifts. They are a quilt as you go pattern, so I was using some of the different stitches too. It was an easy way to see what those stitches look like but still be completing a project at the same time. I've 8 finished and maybe will crank out some more before Christmas.

Love your quilts. I also use many different stitches when sewing. I Like the effect that it gives. Plus not I know which stitches work best for other projects.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

Yes, I've used my walking foot on the Bernina 440 with decorative stitches. Works great.

That's a really great idea. I made some quilt sandwich samplers and printed out all the stitches, so I would have a reference copy, but I think I just might try your idea on an actual quilt. Really nice.

auntiehenno 11-24-2010 12:00 PM

Pretty quilts and see your stitching---fun.

maryel 11-24-2010 12:38 PM

Didn't realize how lovely those decorative stitches could be. I have a viking D1 with lots of these stitches and I find myself using the same pretty basic ones again and again. I must start exploring! Thanks for sharing this.

klgreene 11-24-2010 05:12 PM

This is wonderful. I love your quilts. My avatar was quilted like that just to see what it looked like. Some stitches I'll use again. Others I won't. But it makes me feel good that someone else does this.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. And yes, I forgot to add that I used my walking foot. It works much better that way.

such pretty topstitching--really shows off the light/white!

Sheila Elaine 11-24-2010 05:32 PM

Will have to try that on my next quilt. Thanks.

emmy 11-24-2010 05:47 PM

Thank you for the great idea. I have some stitches I haven't even tried.
