Is this a variable star in this pattern?

quilthappygail 07-16-2010 01:35 PM

That is a beautiful quilt. Love it.

I don't understand the question, but I like the quilt.

Pam 07-16-2010 01:38 PM

Yes variable star and rail fence.

amma 07-16-2010 01:59 PM

It looks like a log cabin with a star center... Is that what a variable star is?

Pam 07-16-2010 02:01 PM

Variable star is a plain square with 4 flying geese around it.

Nice quilt! I really like the layout. That would make an awsome QOV

But yes I have heard that star block referred to as Variable Star and Saw Tooth Star. Turn it on point and it becomes an Ohio Star.

Well I am going to try and make this quilt. I cannot take credit for it. I saw it at a local quilt show a couple of months ago.

Star patterns like that can have several different names. Look up the pattern at quilter'scache.com and you will find it, I'm sure. Rail fence is the name of the stripes.

Beautiful!

I really like how the miters on the rail fence give this quilt such dimention.

Ditter43 07-16-2010 02:24 PM

That is an awesome quilt!!! I would love to have it!!

This is a great way to make lots of flying geese. I do add more than called for, I would rather trim and have them perfect, but still only a tiny amount of waste.

The square on the left is most commonly called Sawtooth Star, but as others have said, sometimes is called Variable Star. The square on the right is more commonly known as Variable Star, but in the Red/White/Blue swap, Deb Watkins referred to it as Coxey's Camp. I haven't found that name anywhere else. It can get confusing when blocks are called by so many names.

The quilt you pictured is gorgeous! I can see why you'd like to make one too.
