So I decided to take the plunge and hand quilt my latest creation. I have hesitated to do so in the past because I've not had the space to leave a quilt frame up to do it, and I'm a big fat chicken and too impatient. But I wanted to try it at least once, so I decided to try it on this one. So far I have 1/3 of 1 block done...and I like the results so far I think. I looks horribly juvenile compared to some of the other quilting I've seen on here, but hey, so far so good for a beginner, right?

Tell me what you think...

I'm so glad that you're doing it! I hand quilt on my minis and love the quietness of it.

Stitchnripper 04-23-2011 05:27 PM

You did a very nice job!

You’re doing beautiful!! My 1st hand quilting stitches were gigantic. Please let us see the quilt when it’s all finished.

MamaBear61 04-23-2011 05:32 PM

Keep up the good work.

After two hours of bending over the frame my neck is killing me. I've got 1/3 of one block done, and I think I'll keep going. Not only is it not half bad looking, I really enjoy the texture of the quilt with the stitching in it...

Definitely going to post when it's all done.

Hand quilting and applique are great on road trips, if you have a driver

LivelyLady 04-23-2011 06:04 PM

Your stitches look very even. You will be amazed at the difference in your stitches from the beginning to the end of your quilt. Mine changed even on the small potholder I started out on. Your doing great. Just remember to stretch and it's always a good excuse for a back rub from your husband.lol

You are doing great !!
My first I didn't have any type of frame & my stitches were sooo big almost like basting, but I loved the first one!! :-D

cabbagepatchkid 04-23-2011 07:32 PM

You're doing great  Can't wait to see it when it's finished.

If you have to bend over your work then maybe you could adjust the height/tilt of the hoop or the height of your chair so you don't strain your neck muscles.

bigdogmom 04-23-2011 07:34 PM

Hand quilting is so relaxing. Looks great!

sherriequilts 04-23-2011 07:36 PM

Way to go. Keep it up can't wait to see the finished quilt. It will be a treasure for certain.

connie d 04-23-2011 08:10 PM

You are doing great. Maybe if your neck hurts so you should try another chair or position? Good luck. :):):)

earthwalker 04-23-2011 08:30 PM

Coming along nicely....remember to hop up from time to time and do some stretches or a spot of another activity. I find handwork extremely addictive and meditative...you will be hooked in no time.

mrsj82 04-23-2011 10:22 PM

I am finding it extremely relaxing to be honest. I just pop in a movie or a DVD of a TV series I like and just let my mind wander as I do the quilting. I think I really will do more of these hand quilted from now on.

And I've got the height of the chair pretty much where it needs to be and the frame is one height fits all...(Sad) but I'll just hop up from time to time and do the other chores that I'm avoidig as I quilt! LOL

And, next time, don't stitch through the seam thicknesses. The extra resistance is more draining.

Nice job!

sueisallaboutquilts 04-24-2011 04:28 AM

You're doing great!!!
I am a hand quilter and find it very relaxing, among other things.
We're both chickens ! I'm trying to learn MQ and I'm afraid of my machine! hahahaha
Keep up the good work! :D:D

debcavan 04-24-2011 04:31 AM

By the end of the quilt, you will be an expert. I quilt only by machine because that is what I enjoy. My friend prefers by hand because she sits in front of the fireplace in the winter and enjoys it.

boohoofish 04-24-2011 05:38 PM

You are off to a good start. I'm still far behind the majority of people but when I look at my first several attempts I realize that I've come a lonnnnnnnnnnng way.
Please stick to it and enjoy the peace!

Vickymomof6 04-24-2011 06:12 PM

Never despise meager beginnings…

they end up with Masterful Ends!!!!

Practice makes perfect and you have a very good start!
