Vintage Blocks turned into Quilts

5 Attachment(s)
My husbands aunt asked me if I could turn some blocks that her great great grandmother pieced some years ago into quilt for her mom (who has has them in her possession). I am still waiting to hear the final details of how old these blocks really are. But in the meantime, My DH's Aunt has presented two of 5 quilts to her mom as a birthday present. I plan to present the final three quilts this week. Here are 4 of 5 I have finished so far.

In the first 3 of the 4 quilts shown here, I un-pieced and re-pieced the blocks within the quilt because the original blocks were not pieces straight nor the same size.

I struggled with how to handle the last quilt because there were so many pieces in the blocks. I chose not to rip them apart, as there were 30 blocks, and chose to just cut them down to the same size. I added the 1/2" alternating colored sashing to help hide where I cut points off when trimming the blocks down to a workable block. All in all, I like how it turned out.

The singled block wall quilt was made with the only block that I was unable to fit into the other quilts. I had originally intended to just give it back untouched but I couldn't help but to create a simple wall quilt with it.

My favorite of these quilts are Quilt 2 and 3.

Enjoy some vintage...new eye candy.

Impressive indeed! You have worked magic with the blocks...If I were the recipient I would be thrilled to bits with these.

I think it's wonderful how you've turned those orphaned blocks into real quilts. Very pretty.

I so appreciate efforts to recycle wonderful vintage quilt squares because textile history is a hobby of mine. The way you've combined the two different blocks in the first one, with the tiny shots of red in the sashing squares, is just magical! They are all wonderful!

I love the first one. It is a simple Shoo Fly block but he visual impact is stunning.

I don't think I've ever seen vintage blocks used so well and I can imagine the patience it took to rework to make square/straight/etc. Wow!
