Hi all,
I heard back from Singer Co...they were fast! My vintage Singer sewing machine is model 66-16, made in New Jersey in 1949. I also have the original cabinet. As I said before I am a wee bit :oops: that I have never thought to quilt or sew with it...all I have ever done is admire it!.. :) It was my Great-grandma's machine, we all called her Ma.. I have many fond memories of lounging on her bed with the ceiling fan going, and all the windows open with the nice breeze, and watching Ma at the machine, her tea glass next to her, and she was sewing away...she always made sure I had my favorite aluminum glass of sweet tea, and let me "help" with handing her things...I had many great dresses she made with this machine! I also have quite a few quilt tops, but most of those were hand pieced by she and my Nanny (Ma's daughter)...After stopping "lurking" on this great board, and signing in, I have seen where some of you use vintage machines....with awesome success!! I have seen some beautiful quilts made with them...So, I have taken the machine out, and while I have a lot of the accessories, I am missing the throat plate...so, will be iso that...also, will be taking it in to local shop to get it all checked over, and think I may give sewing a go with it...ok. that's my novel for now... ;-)

Wow - I have a machine in that same exact cabinet. I've never sewed with mine either, afraid of the treadle part I guess. It is beautiful. good luck with her!

She looks very much like the one my mom had (hers had a motor though) that I learned to sew on. It sewed many of my clothes growing up and after I moved back to town, all my HS home ec projects, many of my kids clothes and I wish I'd been smart enough to rescue her from the rubble when our house burned in 2000 like the fire inspector suggested.

WONDERFUL story and machine!! PLEASE!!!!!! Write that story down and sign it...then place it into one of the treadle cabinet drawers! Without the story, it's just another old machine that I'd pay $50 to $75 for...WITH the story, I'd pay more....just for the history and the sentimental value! If you can, include some other stories about Ma...totally priceless treasure!

Really enjoyed your story about Ma. Looks very similar to my 1935 Singer Treadle & she works like a charm. DH cleaned using Billy's tute & is in the middle of restoring cabinet. Think you'll love sewing with your heirloom.

I have my grandmothers 1937 Singer, in the cabinet. It has a motor. Perhaps you could have a motor added to yours?!?!? In the past I have made clothes on it. I am now spoiled to the modern machines! :)

Thanks ya'll, for the kind comments, and the great idea to write the stories down and put with the machine! I did not realize that you can't see the motor on the back of the machine in my pics, but it does have one. All I can really see is it needs a good cleaning!! EEK!! Mom says Ma had it added on, but neither of us can recall when...I have so many great memories of Ma, and Nanny...I am blessed to have had some wonderful women in my life...and am thankful to still have my Mom...she is 7 yrs in remission from lung cancer...she only has 1 lung, but does remarkably well! She doesn't sew or quilt, tho...she crochets..and she always says she is so glad that I inherited the love for all things fabric, as she did not...I will post more pics of machine as DH and I get it going, he is pretty good at working on my machines, for a guy who doesn't do that for a living...I posted a little update on a separate post about the motor, but wasn't sure if I should add it here, so forgive me if you are reading the same stuff...thanks again!
