wow ~ you have been busy!! They are very nice!
How man Veterans are at the location you create these for? |
Thanks everyone!
These will go to our local nursing home... there are 9 here. The "local" Veterns Hospital Nursing Unit, I do not have a accurate count, I know it is one of the main facilities for Minnesota, and have 2-3 floors ( some are ambulatory , some assisted by a walker and others are in a wheelchair, some are not ambulatory.... I have sent 6 walker bags, and 2 wheelchair quilts to this facility. I have 3 more almost complete..... |
beautiful job!

...and I've found some more fabric for you. But give me until next week to send it out to you. I've got a truck load of items to send out on Wednesday...and I'm thinking the snow delivery is not going to be real fun...lol.

contact ur local Nursing home Activity Director or the VFW.
If they are unable to help u. PM me and I'll see what I can do. I am associated with my local VFW, but this project is something I just saw a need and jump into. While there are some good programs out there for Veterns, I felt that the small town Veterns might not get as much assistance as larger communities. |
I have a very close contact but I'm scared I would over commit - I have a problem with saying no. I will check though and see what is needed the most.

LOL... I have the same problem...... I told them I would not commit to a certain # of items or a dead line.. I will send when I have some made. They will not be on a regular basis..... no schedule, etc......They were just happy to get them. I think the Veterns Hospital Nursing Unit plans to use them as BINGO prizes and/or special gifts. Their funding has been cut so severely! Start small... one nursing home... one Activity Director........ The private sector nursing home may not have that many Veterns. Our small town nursing home only has 9 ( 6 men, 3 women) out of about 100 patients. Not a very big precentage. So many in need , so little time! |
Those are wonderful. What a great thing you are doing.

Would also like to make these for our VFW. Do you have the pattern or where I could get it. Thanks
|
Walker Bags are a huge hit at a nursing home in Florida that World of Charity Stitching make for the group. February is my attempt to make them. I do love your fabric.

I got my original pattern offline , free. But as usual, I modifed it. It is a very simple pattern. I did a tutorial ( but the Admin moved it to the links/resources .. I am assuming because I included the link where I got the original pattern idea) http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-87996-1.htm But u can find it here..... If u need further clarifications or help just PM me.... I'd be happy to help. |
Beautiful Bags!! Good job :D:D:D

I have used a walker and it is so difficult to get around with one and impossible if u have to carry anything. They are made to carry a FEW things.. take precautions not to over load the bags. Overloading the bags ( why I chose this size and not larger or with more pockets) can cause the walker to tip over. Thanks for all the compliments..... all the colorful fabrics have been donated by ppl of this board... MANY Thanks to everyone!! |
Bluteddy; I am trying to make a few bags. yours look like it is folded in half. I have trouble figuring out how they could be attached to the walker. Will ties be better as they are more adjustable? Any tips ?
thanks,Elaine |

thanks,Elaine Dear PurplePassion: Mine do fold over the top rail of the walker. U could use ties... but the ties do not offer as much support to keep the bags from "swinging". I would suggest u add ties to the bottom corners of the bag as well , so that they could be tied to the side frames as well. There is no right or wrong way to make one... other than to over size it and make the walker top heavy. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-87996-1.htm I'm happy to help, if u have other questions. PM me anytime. |
