Wall hanging from handkerchiefs

1 Attachment(s)
A friend asked me to make a wall hanging from some of her vintage hankies..I chose several that seemed to go together nicely..she still has over 40 left..I used lots of advice from members here on the board. Which really helped..itwas a fun project as I’ve been working on huge quilts lately. Some of the hankies were quite large, so made butterflies and then they fit my background blocks.

That's beautiful & I'm sure she will be really, really pleased with the results. The butterflies are a special touch. Thanks for sharing.

So pretty. I really plan to do one someday.

Lovely, now a question. Do you have a pattern for the butterflies? I know they are folded, but not sure just how. I have a lot of hankies from my grandmother and great grandmother that I want to use in 2 quilts, for my daughter and niece. I don't want to cut the hankies though. I like your butterflies.

Brings back memories of ironing my Mom's hankies and putting them in her hanky box, which I now have. Lovely piece you are making.

That's so pretty! I love old hankies and have a bunch I want to work with.

Wonderful results with the hankies. I have 3 hankies that I bought over 30 years ago in Alaska and plan (no rush) to make a small WH with them. Your's are beautiful.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments..I had asked for advice earlier...one of the links was victirianquiltdesigns.com which gives a easy step by step on the butterflies..also if you search on the quilting board, there are lots of great ideas!

I love what you did with the vintage hankies. There are quite a few in my collection, too, and this is an excellent example of what can be done. Thank you so much.

What a beautiful wall hanging!! I have some hankies that I want to do something with... How exactly did you attach the hankies to the block??? By hand? By machine? With some sort of bonding??? Please help??? And...your quilt is beautiful!!!

MicheleC 07-09-2019 01:02 PM

I love the butterflies! What a lovely quilt!

oldquilter 11-01-2019 05:51 PM

I’m so sorry...missed seeing this question...I used machine quilting to attach the hankies to the blocks...then quilted around them too..used appliqué machine stitching on the edges..
