. . . let your 5-year-old grandson play! I was working on a baby quilt one day when he was here. He loves to be involved. "Grandma, you have so much fabric that I love!" He knows he can get scraps out of my scrap drawers, so he pulled out one piece and said,"This is the giraffe's head." He then found strips that he wanted me to sew together for the neck and showed me just how I should sew the neck and head together. Next he cut a body and showed me how to attach that to the neck. And then he found two legs and I followed his instructions to attach them to the body. And then he needed a smiley mouth and eyes on both sides of the head. And, judge for yourself, doesn't this look like a giraffe?

Love it! A child's imagination is usually much better than ours. You might get great ideas from him.

JenniePenny 01-31-2013 06:45 AM

Oh yes, it's a darling giraffe. Sounds like you are having a ball together.

MaryMo 01-31-2013 06:49 AM

so now do you make a quilt for him around that giraffe? creativity lives!

sue z q 01-31-2013 06:58 AM

So cute; I love to let the little ones sew with me. The giraffe reminds me of a cat one of mine sewed.

joyce j 01-31-2013 07:02 AM

That is so cute, I would let him make some more then applique themand make a quilt!

CarlyAnnQuilts 01-31-2013 07:33 AM

Adorable! Might need to make him a little quilt out of it. Never know what it could lead too!

My mom saved the first 'thing' I ever sewed from scrap fabrics I found. She brought it to me (it's some horrid crazy looking doll dress thing LOL) and it is displayed right above my cutting table. I smile everytime I see it.

This is just too special for words. I still have a snowman that my son made when he was three years old and when I look at it there are tears in my eyes. He is now 48. What great memories we can make. BrendaK

That is an awesome giraffe. That reminds me of the time my 3 year old daughter spent hours nailing pieces of wood together and coloring it some green spots...she is now 23 and wants me to make her a giraffe quilt. She can't believe I still have her giraffe. Imagine that...

You're sure a nice grandma!
NOTE: be sure to label the final version somehow. He was so young when he created it, it'll be a wonderful souvenir.

A crafter or quilter in our future

redquilter 01-31-2013 04:39 PM

Oh that is sooooo cute. I agree with the others, have him do a few more and applique them on a quilt. What a wonderful quilt that would be.

coopah 01-31-2013 05:29 PM

Oh my goodness! That is great "kid art." Be sure to keep a picture of it...maybe even frame it or turn it into a blankie. I just love the way kids think about making things!

cathyvv 01-31-2013 05:33 PM

Aren't kids grand? I see a block design...maybe a whole jungle full!
