I have been quilting just long enough to get over confident, and today, I gleefully started to quilt my Corvette quilt. I had bought a checker black and white fabric, like a race flag for the backing.
I made two full length stitches before I realized I had forgotten to pull down the walking foot and therefore I had puckers everywhere! And then when I started ripping the thread out, I noticed that the seams on the back didn't line up with the backing right, and it just looked awful. I finished ripping out the thread, thinking the whole time about what I wanted to do, and I have decided that I just have to buy different fabric for the back, because I will never get the backing to line up right. So, phooey. Tomorrow I am going to buy some plain red or gray so that if I pin it on crooked, as I will, it won't show. Yeah, I'll attach a picture of my quilt. You will agree that a checkered back would have looked wonderful. Maybe sometime I will use that backing, on a smaller quilt, and when I am a bit more experienced!! My quilt will still look very good, and I will try to forget how I had it pictured mentally! But....still...phooey. |
Yes, your quilt will look gorgeous!!! I see your quilt inspector is already giving the "approval"!!!
Yes, my quilt inspector is also here inspecting my typing!
That checkered backing might be a good fabric to use when quilting from the back sometime, rather than the front.
It really would have been wonderful with this one though, I agree. :-) Jan in VA |
Now that is a good idea. Thanks. That would work. And maybe someday I will be doing something besides stitching in the ditch! :)
oh my!! the front is absolutely STUNNING!
WAIT...why not just make a border around your backing fabric...that way it will still look they way you wanted and it will line up ok!
Love it!

Maybe you just had the wrong checkered flag fabric.
Timeless Treasures makes this one, and the lines are all wavy, which would hide all the ... uh... variability. (Sorry, we don't have it... but search on it's pattern number and you may be able to find it. gm-c5813) |
At least use the checkerd fabric for the binding. It sounds like the perfect companion anyway.
awww too bad the checkered fabric won't work out with this quilt. It definitely would have been perfect for it. I am sure you will find another quilt for it though. Love your corvette fabric.
Very nice quilt!
Nice quilt!
Dina, I've had my share of goof ups too. I once sewed a border on backards (sigh.) The good part is that it won't likely happen again, experience is a good teacher. Your quilt is wonderful!!
It's a great quilt! Yes, it would be very neat if you could use that checkered material for the binding.
Thanks for the nice comments and the good suggestions.
I actually saw some of that wavy checker fabric when I bought the checker board fabric that I bought. It might "hide" my "inability to line the front and back up so my sewing looks straight on both sides." I need to think on that. |
How about using the checkerboard as your binding? Just a thought.
This quilt looks great! I see you inspector is hard at work doing their job :-D
Gorgeous quilt- your right the checker fabric would have looked great - can't wait to see what you come up with as a background
My hubby would love that Corvette quilt! He has a "69 Stingray, red.
You did a nice job of piecing this one together! Too bad you can't use the checkered fabric, it would have looked great, but I'm sure your replacement will too. Can't wait to see the end result, good luck!
Smart looking :-P
Somebody's going to be very happy with this quilt! It's neat!
Your quilt top looks great. I agree that the checkered border would be a good addition. You already have the fabric and it would be an appropriate border.
That strobing checker is at Hobby Lobby, too.
Such a masculine quilt. I am sure the recipient won't notice that the back is not checkered flag. Or you could make borders on it like suggested by others
