I am mostly finished with this top. I can't decide if I want to add a border or not. I am also debating on what color of thread I should use to quilt it all together with. The quilt is a little flamboyant, I know. A lot of the quilt is pink. But I am afraid that pink will be too much. I thought about using just a natural. Then nothing would blend and it would really stand out. Or maybe a brown. But brown also is so blah. Brown might blend the best though and it might tone it down a bit versus adding to it. I also haven't picked out anything for the backing yet. Color suggestions for that as well?

My picture is a bit dark. Everything is brighter. The light ones in the middle are a soft yellow with a lighter shade of the turquoise.

the top. Sorry I should have laid it out better

Here is what some of the fabric looks like

More close-up of the fabric. Sorry I still can't get the yellow to show. The 2nd and 3rd block above the solid pink is the yellow

I am new to quilting so maybe you want to listen to someone else. That's OK.

But in my quilting class, my teacher recommends a light grey when you have no idea what color to choose. It blends with most colors except pure black.

I would go with verigated (sp) thread will blend in really nice.

What about a light burgundy? And for a border, if you want to tone down the pink, pick out one of the turqoises.

I too would go with a variegated. I have one that would go with your quilt But I'm useing it right now for my quilt. The quilting is coming out beautiful.

You could always use clear thread. I would go with the chocolate color for athe backing, border myself but hey a flamboyant quilt is cool too. Color can lift your spirits on a dreary day and I think its a pretty cool quilt. Now you have so show us the finished product.. curiosty on what you end up doing will get us all!!

I would use a Med-Dk Pink. But I have never been too crazy about the look of varigated thread on a quilt, but that is just me. What was your first thought when you looked at it, I would say go with that.

Very, very nice :!:

I would do a Stipple or FMQ stitch with a pink and blue matching, variegated thread. If you can find it. It's a bold quilt, you don't want to wimp out with the thread choice;>

I would go with a pink or burgundy. A flambouyant quilt needs flambouyant quilting. I love it.

I would go with brown. It will stand out quite a bit on the lighter parts, but I think it would tie it all together the best.

wow, sounds like you have a variation of answers, so now you're probably just as confused as when you posted. tee hee My 2 cents, I'd put a border on it. Maybe a small one (an inch) and then a 3 - 4 inch border. I'd probably use the teal/blue colors for these... then I'd quilt in brown. Can't wait to see it finished!

Cute quilt. I have no idea what color.

LovinMySoldier 03-23-2010 01:27 PM

Wow thanks for all the input. I still haven't decided but I am loving this input! Thank you

How abourt varigated thread.

Ditter43 03-23-2010 03:48 PM

How do you plan to quilt it? The quilting design always helps me decide on the thread color. I would put a brown border on it and use one of the pinks for the binding!!JMO I love the quilt!!

I have those fabrics! I'm thinking the brown would look really nice.

dkabasketlady 03-23-2010 05:53 PM

What a beautiful quilt and the pink's are perfect. I think a brown thread will work great!

Gramof6 03-23-2010 09:30 PM

I think it is going to be a gorgeous quilt! As for the color of thread, I think either a Natural or a Brown. Just my 1/2 a cent. Are you going to handquilt or machine quilt it? You might want to stretch out a nice long pc of whatever colors of thread across the quilt top and audition them to see which you prefer. That is how I make my decision most of the time. Sometimes the most unexpected thread wins. Anxious to see it completed. It'll be a beauty.

Well I think I am going to machine quilt it but I have only done that once before. I am pretty much an inexperienced newbie lol. But I think I will have fun playin around. It might be twin sized but I think it is even a bit small for that. So its a pretty good size to start with and nothing too big and too hard to handle. I have been trying to get my grandma to teach me how to quilt every time I go back home to visit but she is pretty tight lipped on how she does things. She likes to just tell me oh hunny just keep trying things out and you'll get it... You all seem very helpful. I really appreciate the tips and advice.

SewExtremeSeams 03-24-2010 09:36 AM

Brown seems to me the best choice... maybe a warm brown rather than a really dark brown. I am sure that what ever color you finally decide on will look great. Just don't take too long to pick a color.

craftybear 03-26-2010 11:33 PM

Varigated thread I think would be cool!

littlehud 03-28-2010 02:06 PM

I did a quilt similar to that and I used variegated thread and loved the effect. Give it a try.
