what do i do?

Working on this quilt. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...psd8e88103.jpg
Do I put the 2" cream squares on the brown border along the outside? My thinking is no. i dont have a pattern so i am just winging this as i go along.

ArtsyOne 04-27-2013 04:04 PM

I like to have my blocks completely sashed all the way around before I add the border, so if I were making this I would add the cream blocks, then add a narrow "stop" border and then add the border you have shown. But as you know, there are no quilt police!

Bonnie Hunter is working on a Sister's Choice quilt this week on her site www.quiltville.blogspot. Look for her free pattern and see if it gives you some ideas. It looks like you have already added the large brown border or is that a banker underneath? If so maybe you can appliqué the white cornerstones to complete the design? If not I would add the brown sashing and corner stones to finish the design.

MimiBug123 04-27-2013 04:26 PM

I think I would add the cornerstones in order to break up the brown. Then I would add an outside border to complete it. I love your quilt, btw!

quiltingnd 04-27-2013 04:27 PM

That is a brown blanket underneath. All I have are the squares and the lattice between them. Nothing on the outside framing the larger squares (top/bottom or sides). So the small cream squares should be continued through the outside trim?

Thanks Mimi. :) It's much better than I thought it would be considering the stars are just made out of scraps.

PaperPrincess 04-27-2013 04:53 PM

I would complete the lattice all the way around the quilt just as you have it in the center, then add a border. I know you used scraps, but I'm kinda thinking of a red border...
Love it so far!!!

nativetexan 04-27-2013 04:55 PM

Looking at it, I agree in adding the cream squares to finish blocking in your blocks. then add additional border. Great quilt!!

Jingle 04-27-2013 06:39 PM

I agree with nativetexan. This how I would do it too.

nanacc 04-27-2013 06:46 PM

Great quilt! I wish my scrappy looked that good.

QM 04-27-2013 06:52 PM

that quilt is going extremely well. I agree with Artsyone. I would put on an outer sashing, a plain narrow row then the border you planned, unless that makes the quilt too big, in which case, leave off the outer sashing.

I agree with ArtsyOne

Add the final border!

heather1949 04-28-2013 03:28 AM

A very beautiful quilt.

nunnyJo 04-28-2013 03:40 AM

yep, cornerstones all way around but beautiful quilt

gabeway 04-28-2013 04:41 AM

I agree with artsyone.

Baloonatic 04-28-2013 05:27 AM

I would certainly continue the cream squares in the first border. Without them it doesn't look cohesive to me. I agree with ArtsyOne

ssnare 04-28-2013 05:41 AM

I would add a solid border with the corner stones, then add your cream 2" border and then another border of a color in your quilt to pull it together.

ube quilting 04-28-2013 05:59 AM

Are you adding the outside sashing and a border or just a border? If the border is going to be a different color than the outside sashing, yes add the coins. If the border is the same color as the sashing, no, the coins will stick out and pull the eye to them.

Finish the sashing around the outside with the coins and add the border only if it is a different color.

If just a border, then don't add the coins.

This quilt is very nice. I like the stars.
peace

I agree, this would look great!!!

grammysharon 04-28-2013 06:24 AM

I agree, you need to complete the sashing 1st, then move on as she stated. Love the final border!!!!!

This is what I ended up with. Not sure if I like the narrow border. (no scraps of red to use) I was aiming for lap size (57x70) and I ended up with 57x68. Wish it hadn't been a couple of inches short, but couldn't figure out how to add on to the length without messing up the width. The binding will be the same brown as in the lattice.

Anyways...what do you think?

Now to figure out how to quilt it.

quiltingnd 05-01-2013 02:01 PM

Decided not to try fmq on it and went with a safe diamond quilt pattern.

nativetexan 05-01-2013 03:58 PM

It turned out beautifully. love it. I just made a quilt and had to trim the top and bottom border 1/2 half inch different from each other due to the backing fabric being short. no one notices. Great job!!!

sewplease 05-01-2013 06:08 PM

I'm so glad that you posted the completed top. You have a real treasure there...it's LOVELY!

quiltingnd 05-02-2013 05:41 PM

Thank you. Its for my mom for mothers day. Only my 6th quilt ever.

Nammie to 7 05-02-2013 07:43 PM

It does need that outer sashing - that and an additional small border would complete the quilt.
