So I did 6 months of a block of the month and wasn't able to do the rest. They're 12 1/2" blocks. I know they're kind of strange looking blocks because my friend and I, who were doing this togehter, always wanted to rearrange the pieces into something other than the design we were given. I'd like to put them together into a twin sized quilt, but whatever I try I don't like. Any suggestions?

Find some fabric that has all of those colors in it. Cut the fabric the same size as those blocks. Alternate your pieced block and a plain block (the new fabric). If you like that, then put some sashing between the blocks and a border.

ssnare 10-09-2010 06:03 AM

I would take the color blue or red, match it and make sashings between, add borders of the same material. Use solid color of the blue or red which ever color you did not choose and make the same size block. Then put the blocks that are finished through out the quilt.

carol45 10-09-2010 06:07 AM

do you think it would be better with straight rows or on point?

SandyinZ4 10-09-2010 06:10 AM

IMHO it would give it more character to put the blocks on point. Then take the other suggestions from above and incorporate solids with sashing. You will have a nice size small quilt. Show us pics when finished with top. Nice job on your blocks.

agree with both above comments but do them together. r,w,&b sashing, with plain white or light blue blocks. goode luck and please sho finished project

SO with your advice I did this with eq7 just now. What do you think of it? it's really hard for me to judge whether I will like this when it's a quilt. I really appreciate all comments!
Thanks,
Carol

It looks good. But, play with it some more and put something else in the half blocks around the inside border and see how it looks.

AnnaK 10-09-2010 06:23 AM

I like the center "medallion" kind of look and I might also add some interest in the borders like flying geese using all of the colors in the quilt or just one (red or blue). Let us see how it all comes out. I think it's going to look great. These are beautiful blocks. I never get tired of making RW&B quilts.

I was thinking this when I saw your blocks I love it Add a pieced border out of solids

littlehud 10-09-2010 06:31 AM

I think it looks great. I would quilt some pretty medallions in the plain squares.

RkayD 10-09-2010 06:36 AM

I like your layout very much. Maybe some star quilting in the solid blocks. If it were mine I'd use red/white/blue/ varigated thread. It adds alot of texture without being overwhelming. =) Can't wait to see what you come up with.

SandyinZ4 10-09-2010 06:46 AM

I would second the notion of doing colored blocks or 'piano keys' around the outside edge. I would make the red block sashings just a tad wider also but that is just me.

I think you are on the right track. You might use a darker blue for the solid squares , or darker blue for something in the center of the squares. Also, the half diamonds on the edges might have something in the center with the solid squares between your finished squares and the outside edge.

If you don't wish to turn your blocks into a quilt you could use two of them as a center piece mat and the remaining four for placemats, unless you have Need for six placemats. Another option is two table runners using three blocks in each, or what about a wall hanging. They are nice blocks, so many options. Would love to see your final product. Good luck, and have fun!

Now that I can see a layout I have a suggestion. If you number your blocks top row 1,2,3, 2nd row 45, 3rd row 6,7,8, etc. Now put 1 pieced block in #2, 6, 8, 11, 13, and 17. Use the light color you have for the setting triangles, a dark for the middle solids, and the light color for the center squares. Can't wait to see your finished quilt.

I think I would also add some nine patch blocks in the same colors........ :D

Gramyx7 10-09-2010 09:28 AM

I would make two more of the spinning pin wheels looking blocks, and put them all on point on the outside rows and put your solid blocks on the inside... that would look really nice.. balance it out.

Here are a couple of more ideas, based on some of your suggestions. I think I like the one better with the blocks closer to the center--I think that would look better on a bed. Any more suggestions would be great. I love this group!

I think you're right. It sounded better in my head than it looks on the screen. Good luck!

i know you said you were looking for a twin size quilt - but what about a window valance? I did this w/ some orphan pieces that my great aunt made back in the 30s or 40s..

wow! that looks so cute! I will definitely use that in the future--it's just I have this quilt in mind for a preteen DGS.

This sample looks really good. It will give you space for some great quilting on the plain blocks. I love Americana quilts! It is on my list of to do. I madea small flag wall-hanging but not a whole quilt. The blocks you have are beautiful.

I like these 2 pictures better than the first picture. In fact, I like the 3rd picture the best.

I like the last EQ7 pic that you posted. It says BOY! to me!

tutty 10-10-2010 10:05 AM

If you have extra fabric or ones that will match make solid blocks for around the bom ?

julia58 10-10-2010 10:39 AM

Maybe this is a sign to send them to someone that would know what to do with them. I read a post yesterday where she was wanting to do a swap of rwb blocks for the veterans in her area. And the size is just what she was wanting I believe.
