My older sister is in the early stages of Dementia and she started this quilt a few years ago,I said i would take it over and finish it for her,as you see the strips are not sewn together.
There isn't a lot of material left,I wondered about a thin border of cream then piano keys.
This was like doing a jigsaw puzzle for me and I wrongly went on to make more blocks without realising or looking to see that it is meant to be square!!

Very pretty, a great tribute to your sister. I think that you idea would look good.

Terri C 08-30-2010 04:54 AM

I think I would go with the dark blue that is in the quilt to frame it out then do the piano keys. Just my thought. How nice of you to finish this for your sister, I'm sure she'll just love it.

Sorry I forgot to say the quilt is for her daughter the rest of the family all have a quilt made by my sister.
If I can find the dark blue I will give that a try.

sewmuchmore 08-30-2010 05:14 AM

I agree with Terri, the darker blue would be perfect. I know that your niece will always treasure it. A wonderful memory of you and her mother. Love to see a picture when you finish it.

Aww, that's really sad about your sister. How nice of you to finish it up. HUGS

Another one that votes for a dark blue, then the keys.

Love to see the finished project.

grammyp 08-30-2010 06:28 AM

If you have enough of the dark blue I think that would make a nice small border, then perhaps the lighter cream for a larger outer border.

Dee 08-30-2010 11:16 AM

Sorry to hear about your sister, but sweet of you to complete the quilt for her daughter. I would go with the dark blue. I think it would make it pop.

Lynneander 08-30-2010 11:46 AM

I agree with some of the other people ... the dark blue and then, if possible, a light cream border.

Any way you finish this beautiful quilt will be perfect. What a wonderful thing you are doing for your sister.

beautiful quilt top, glad you are going to finish it for your sister!

I am not sure I would add the piano key border. I learned recently (thru experience) that it can take away from the quilt itself. I think a couple of borders using the colors in the quilt might work better.

Here is what I am talking about...

too busy

I like this better and it is what I am going to use

I think so too. And I would like to see it finished. How kind of you to finish it for your niece.

I would do a narrow border of white, maybe 1-2" then a wide border of the darkest blue from the quilt. It will be very pretty.

Jingle 08-30-2010 01:10 PM

Very pretty and so good of you to finish it up for her. The dark blue with the piano keys would look great. If you can't match the dark blue in the quilt, I would just choose something that looks nice.

kristen0112 08-30-2010 01:10 PM

I think it would be pretty with the dark blue as the border but then echo the triangles into the border using the fabrics, as if the largest triangle was coming into the border. I may not have described that well hopefully you get what I mean.

campion 08-31-2010 01:03 AM

I have read all your replies and thank you for your help have checked the material left---I maybe have enough dark blue to do a fine border then a cream border as I have enough of that, then it comes to the binding I'm not sure yet wether there will be enough of the darker yellow to bind it that's the next biggest peice.
I am hopeless at putting colours together, thank you for your help

Ritzquilts 08-31-2010 08:35 AM

If I remember right, the name of that pattern is called Hiden wells and is made in strips and cut apart and then resewn. I would add a dark blue boarder too. Nice of you to finish it

campion 08-31-2010 10:10 AM

Yes it is in strips then cut apart I believe she started it and it was a Mystery quilt---tell you what it was a mystery to me at first but at least she had some blocks made and the instructions were there
Thank you all for you help and hints

IBQUILTIN 08-31-2010 10:16 AM

If you can't find the fabric, post a close up pic on here and someone will miraculously come up with it, or at least a link to someplace that has it. Its amazing

Janet Orfini 08-31-2010 10:22 AM

I would use the darkest blue as a 2 1/2 to 3" boarder to fram the quilt then use the dark gold for sashing and bind it with the darkest blue.

Ditter43 08-31-2010 12:00 PM

I think a darker border would make the quilt pop better..... :-D
