My daughter used to make a lot of beaded bracelets and keychains etc. She has decided she has outgrown that hobby and was cleaning her room out last night (I know I nearly dropped dead of the shock!) and brought me a bunch of beads to send off to my DGD. These were in the bunch and I thought I could put them to good use. I think it would be a great way to keep track of rows, pieces, etc.

Do some of you use these?

raptureready 06-24-2010 06:11 AM

No, I never have but I think I just may look for some the next time I'm in Micheals.

This is a great idea, better than a strip of paper pinned or a piece of tape stuck to fabric with the number or letter on it. My kids always manage to think the tape is a mistake and try to "clean" it up. I never have piece or row markers in the same place they started they normally end up in the trash! I'll have to invest in some number beads!

I think I have some polymer clay might put the same kids to work making some. lol

She had letter beads also but my family already thinks I am crazy. I could just see them as I sang the ABCs while piecing.

A letter/number combo would work wonderfully for paper piecing.

Swan Song 06-24-2010 06:37 AM

Hmmm, maybe I should keep the letters also then.

Haven't used them for quilting but do use them (the letters) for keeping track of patterns and pattern repeats while knitting.

I actually ordered some of the pins with beads from Fabric Depot in OR. They were on sale for $2.50 last week. I thought they were a great idea, but aren't you a smarty for putting these together yourself?

wvdek 07-05-2010 12:10 PM

I have letters and numbers....i.e. row A, block 1
row B, block 1
It really helps me when I have numerous rows and blocks. Took me forever to find the beads with numbers as every place I went they were out.

What a great idea!!!!!

I printed out numbers 1 - 20 in large font (with about 1" space between each number.) Had it laminated and the cut the numbers in small pieces. Put a small hole in the order of each with a small hole punch. then put a small safety pin in each piece. So I just pin one to each row. I always put them in the upper left corner so I'll know which way to sew the next row. When I'm finished, I just pin them to a larger safety pin to keep them together and put them in my sewing cabinet storage area in the door. Then I have them whenever I need them and don't have to write out the numbers each time. Has worked great for me.
