this is why I finish my "ugly" quilt

during the period of confinement due to Covid restriction I got rid of almost all the fabric accumulated that I will no longer use. I do not sew clothes anymore, just quilts or crafts.
One friend had brought to me a box full of what she found in her mother's house while preparing it for sale: "you make quilts may be this could be useful to you"
I was on a mission to give and/or use it, but certainly not throwing it in the garbage so.... but NOTHING was 100% cotton

thinking I would just sew some together to "make" a big piece of fabric that could be used for the inside of grocery totes or zippered bags or whatever... I decided to do a reversible 48x48 quilt. I even used an old bed sheet instead of batting. In short, nothing to be proud of but it occupied my long winter time during the beginning of the pandemic.

showing my quilts to one of my friend last weekend, I showed this one to her, laughing and saying it could be used to put on the floor for a cat or dog "bed" or to put a young baby and some toys. She thought it was such a great idea for my grandchild to be. Oh wow I had forgotten that they will be grandparents for the first time in september (they are 15 years younger that I)
I spontaneously gave it to her. You should have seen her teary eyes "really? are you sure?"
Nobody has ever given me a handmade quilt....
I know for a fact that she has a hard time holding a needle and thread as I was showing her how a EPP hexagone. She is good with a lot of things but not with sewing.

I could not beleive how moved she was.
It really made my day and I am so convinced that I will finish all my ugly-to-me quilts.

I like it, especially for a baby to be on. What a blessing for you both!

What a nice story! There is so much negativity in the world these days, it’s great to hear a nice story! There’s been a few instances in my quilting life when people were so touched to receive a hand made quilt. That makes all the efforts worth it.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so yes, finish your ugly quilt. As you saw it was a treasure to your friend.
I personally like the scrappy look and so will the baby. Great job.

Love when our works are so appreciated. Especially when we thought it was not our best. Someone always finds the beauty in it

It is lovely.

I think it's great & don't see anything wrong with it at all. So glad you found a loving home for it. Thanks for sharing it with us before you gave it away.

Wonderful story. I will have to remember this. I sometimes get too fussy about setting quilts. Baby will have lots of tummy time on it. ;)

Very pretty quilt. I never think any quilt is ugly.

I think it’s pretty, I can’t see it at a quilt show, but I like it. It’s a quilt that is meant to be used and loved, personally I tend to like those better than wall hangings.

I was gifted a set of coordinating fat quarters. The fabric patterns and colours were not anywhere near my taste and I considered the collection very ugly. After it sat around long enough for me to want it out of the house, I made a turning twenty quilt from it. Made into a quilt the fabrics weren't quite so bad, but I considered it my ugly quilt. Then I had visitors from across the country and she admired that quilt folded on the back of the sofa so I made her take it home. She was very moved that I would just give away something because it had been admired. I did not say I thought it was ugly.

that is what I like! when of my ugly to me quilt find the right person. It happened to me 3 times. It encourages me to keep finishing what I absolutly do not like. Some body comes along one day and they appreciate it. I can keep using my fabrics that have been hiding for too many years

Some people adore scrappy quilts. they are used and loved.

It seems every time I have used up fabric to a level I am happy with, someone "donates" me a box of fabric. I just have to learn to say "no" I guess.

I had to laugh out loud at what you say. I have the same problem. It never ends it seems. My cleaning lady just last week told me that one of her client wanted to get rid of her quilting fabrics as her eyesight is too bad now. She asked me if I was interested...
Well! you know the answer.

On the good side, I am not a speedy quilter and I only quilt when winter comes our way so I have not bought fabrics for years and I don't even have a stash but just a few yards of 7 or 8 different fabrics.
I am not sure yet that I want to learn to say "no" just yet loll

I love the scrappy look of this quilt. Your friend will surly treasure this gift.
