Here is the Mariner's Compass Block from the Airplane Quilt I am working on. I'm using this pattern....

http://www.colfaxcloth.com/planes.php

Pretty much took me all day to do this one block. Several attempts. And my center circle is still a little wonky. Adds character, right?

jbsstrawberry 05-01-2009 07:35 PM

It looks AWESOME!!! Love the way the bright colors pop right off the background fabric! Great job!

butterflywing 05-01-2009 07:57 PM

i just checked out that quilt. WOW!

and you are off to such an amazing start. that is definitely the hardest one and you did such great job. are you making the entire quilt? if yes, what size? and for whom?

(i hope you're making it as a gift for you)

motomom 05-01-2009 07:59 PM

No, not a gift for me. For my son, who is about to start flight school. I have done several of the airplane blocks, I'll post some pics of those.

OK, here are 3 of the Airplane blocks. Still on the paper from piecing. I think the paper may have had a slight printing error, on each block one of the tail pieces is a slightly different angle, same on every block.

butterflywing 05-01-2009 08:20 PM

i don't think i would have noticed it at all if you hadn't told. it doesn't make them any less cute.

that quilt will have so much of interest going on that it won't be seen, so shh!
no one will be looking for it.

those planes are very nice. i've only once tried out pp'ing to see what it was like. i did one runty little block of a xmas tree. now i can see it's full potential. you're obviously quite an accomplished pp'er to do such fine work. sit back and accept kudus.

do you have a time limit?

motomom 05-01-2009 08:37 PM

No time limit, once he actually begins Navy Flight School, it will take about a year. He has been moved to Pensacola, but is waiting his turn in the school. He's VERY excited, almost as much as his mom!

Actually Butterfly the planes were the first paper piecing that I have ever done. Done lots of sewing though. I would normally NOT have tried this, but I looked and looked for airplane quilts and this was my favorite. The instructions that came with the pattern were very clear and helpful

I'm trying to do all the hard stuff first. Just my way of looking at things. I like to be on a downhill slope! However, having said that, I do think that the hardest thing FOR ME is going to be putting it together to look right, having the colors flow from greenish fields to blue sea/sky. I'm not very good with colors. I have learned lots from this forum, though!

Great quilt idea, and you're doing a wonderful job. He'll love it.

Cool! We are not a naval aviator family, so this is all very new to us. My Dad worked in West Texas oilfields all his life as a roughneck, and I'm a musician by trade. I'm not sure what caused my son to want to fly jets, but he wants it with a passion, and has worked towards that goal for several years now.

I also have a little bit of Navy fabric that I'm going to work in, and I have to have just one little square of Texas A&M fabric, his alma mater. I figure this quilt is going to be so busy that I'll be able to put it in somewhere!

Your mariner's compass block is beautiful and the planes are awesome also. I'm sure the finished quilt will be stunning and that your son will love and cherish it.

Very nice job!

k3n 05-07-2009 02:32 AM

butterflywing 05-07-2009 07:02 AM

what is the other thread ?

Debbie1 05-07-2009 07:24 AM

Your finished block is so great. I love the cloud fabric you've incorporated into the quilt. It's going to be such a neat quilt!

Tippy 05-07-2009 07:36 AM

I LOVE it!!.. and having done a couple of Mariner's Compasses, I know that is truly a challenge.. I'm a former Navy Nurse and I can tell you that he will be bragging on that a LOT.. I also have some Navy fabric and some patriotic pin up fabric chunks I'd be happy to send to you if you'd like it. PM me if you want it.

The Rocket Ship quilt is my first quilt, this will be my second.

And boy, it is taking me a long time to piece the top. Trying to go from green/brown fading upward to blue/sky is a lot harder than I thought it would be.

More pics soon. Right now I'm making propellers. Lots of propellers.
