I am making this for my 8yr old GD and it is alot of hand applique using freezer paper. I want it to fit her full bed and now I am thinking about putting plain squared inbetween the butterfly squares instead of all butterflys. What do you all think? I have made 30 butterfly squares so far.

mygirl66 08-22-2010 08:32 AM

Very pretty! I think it would look good either way!

UglyCook 08-22-2010 08:32 AM

Sew cute! I think plain squares in between would really highlight the butterflies.

amma 08-22-2010 08:38 AM

I think it would be beautiful :D:D:D

I love your work. It sure took some real love to make all those squares. Maybe a sashing of verdigis green would make this come alive. Kind of a stained glass window look.

30 blocks and the sashing and cornerstones will not make it big enough for a full size bed? it should be big enough....
Looks good and girly...

How about a pertty pieced block inbetween the butterflys, or even a simple four or nine patch.

erstan947 08-22-2010 09:41 AM

Whatever you decide be sure and post photos. I would love to see your finished quilt.

tucsonquilter 08-22-2010 09:41 AM

Thanks for the suggestions. I appreciate them and they are helping.

Many quilts have more than one type of block in them.

Your appliqued butterflies are beautiful.

Love your work!! What size are the butterfly blocks? Doing a 'solid' between sounds okay. If you do go that way, IMHO it would look cute if you did the outlines of the butterflies in the solid block, when you quilt it.

PS - where did you get the pattern? I love butterflies.

Ditto.

They are 9 inch blocks and I got the pattern from epatternscentral.com called Beautiful Butterflies Wallhanging.

please don't say that. i have the same pattern and i was thinking 96 x 96.
now i'm thinking of the way that elenore burns does it. hers is a different butterfly pattern but it would still work.

I think the plain squares would highlight the butterflies, too. Very lovely butterflys by the way!

Ritzquilts 08-22-2010 12:51 PM

very nice, and yes plain squares would be great

Jim's Gem 08-22-2010 01:24 PM

Very pretty!

annieshane 08-22-2010 01:35 PM

There are so many options. My favorite would be plain squares of maybe marbled fabrics to coordinate with butterflies. Seems to me that some plainer squared would accent your butterflies more.

dglvr 08-22-2010 01:37 PM

That is truly beautifal and a work of art. Your GD will love it.
Your are very talented. I can't believe your doing that all by hand. I'm impressed.

clem55 08-22-2010 01:59 PM

I was thinking that, maybe black blocks with varigated outlines of butterfly. Or white iwth the varigated thread.

Chatfield 08-22-2010 02:03 PM

I think I would put a pieced block - a fairly simple pieced block - in with the butterflies. I love the butterflies!

n2scraplvr 08-22-2010 02:14 PM

Be easy on yourself! You've already done 30! Alternate these 30 with a 9 patch or plain blocks, a snowball block or anything simple and it'll look great! A snowball block would look great alternated and using the butterfly fabrics in the corners! :-D :-D ;) Very nicely done so far!!!

mollymct 08-22-2010 03:42 PM

I am so inexperienced that I don't know what to suggest, but I love what you have so far!

Ditter43 08-22-2010 03:45 PM

How many more squares do you need? You could make it to fit the top of the bed and then put a flowered border on it....or a fabric with butterflies in it!
I also think a nine patch with the fabrics you have used in the backgrounds would be pretty!:-D

Riversong 08-22-2010 04:17 PM

Have you considered setting it on point??? It is very pretty!

littlehud 08-22-2010 05:39 PM

Those butterflies are so pretty. Great job. I think plain blocks between the butterfly blocks would be pretty. I would quilt a girlie motif on the plain blocks.

pittsburgpam 08-22-2010 05:50 PM

Those are really pretty! I think blank squares would look great.

pab58 08-22-2010 06:55 PM

I would put in the plain squares and then quilt a butterfly in each one. ;)

tucsonquilter 08-23-2010 05:38 AM

I never thought of all the suggestions you all have given. This is why this board is so great. It's like having an extra creative brain cell to work with. Thank you all for the help. I will post WIP pictures soon with the block in between the butterflies and I think I have plenty butterflies now to make a large bed quilt for my GD.

Thanks again for all the wonderful suggestions.

colorfulgrammy 08-23-2010 05:43 AM

I think adding sashing would only draw your eye to the butterflies. The sashing would indeed make a frame for each block. It is bery colorful. She'll love it a lot.
