I just finished the quilt top for my son, who is 12 and severely autistic. He loves trains. The mountains and stream represent Sedona and Oak Creek, where we have spent happy times. The railroad ties are all hand-appliqued, which took months! Can't wait to hand-quilt it!!

Pic is a little fuzzy, probably because it's in front of the window. Colors are a little darker than they appear here.

This is a very nice looking quilt. I love how you bordered it--really adds a lot to it. Your son is going to love it! Nice job.

Holy Crow! That's a lot of work. It does remind me of Sedona and Oak Creek. I went there often when I lived in Phoenix. Makes me miss my mountains and the red rocks. I have huge appreciation for the folks like you who have the patience to do this kind of work. I know myself too well to think I can finish such a thing. Brava!

Wow - it's wonderful. The fabrics you choose really reflect the Sedona area. All those railroad ties! You must be very patient. Great job. I think this will be a huge hit with your son.

The quilt is absolutely beautiful. I would love to know a little about how you did the Sedona mountains. I love the way it looks and would be something I would consider doing on a Southwestern quilt I have planned.

woody1229 05-29-2010 08:58 AM

Thanks all for your kind comments. Got the sandwich done and basted last night, and boy am I sore!

Re: the Sedona mountains - I started with a photo of Sedona and matched a bunch of fabrics to the colors in the photo. (Bought a few key ones, others from stash) I made a strip-piecing from them, using random widths, as if the layers of rock. When I had a pretty big piece, I cut the mountains from it, having made a pattern of how I wanted them to look. I angled the sides of the mountains to give them depth. I pieced them together with the sky pieces. Thought about paper-piecing them, but my PP skills are still a WIP!

Thanks so much for your quick response. I am certainly going to keep this in mind when I start my next southwestern quilt. I love the southwest and my entire house is decorated with things from that area. This quilt of yours really inspired me!

Thanks, again.
