Put this wall hanging together with wool from thrift shops! Had fun looking for wool and felting it. It's definitely the way to go to get a good wool stash.

oh i LOVE!!! your wall hanging---
i love love love working with wools and you are right the thrift stores are the place to get your stock! when it is running anywhere between $20 & $60 a yard on the bolt! i have 2 good sized totes full of (recycled) wools- some overdyed- some left natural- all wonderful! the blocks kind of resemble the Sue Garmen bom they did on the quilt show a couple years ago---is it by chance one of her patterns? i know hers was done with needle turn applique- but i always thought they would be wonderful in wools! if that is one of the patterns you used it does let me know i was right---fabulous in wool! great job!!! |

then rinse in cold- toss into a hot dryer---when it comes out it is ready to cut up & use how ever you want- with no raveling edges... |
I'm on the hunt for wool from thrift shops. I don't know what I'll do with it yet.

It's just beautiful. Have never worked with wool. Need to add that to my bucket list. What do you use for batting when you work with wool?
|
Beautiful job.
|
I love wool projects. Is your background wool overdyed or did you find it in that color?
|
Awesome work.
|
very pretty!!!!
|
Oh, that's really nice!
So, bear with me if this is a silly question, but do you buy clothing that is 100% wool? Thanks always for the info. Maureen |
It came out lovely. I love working with wool, it is so easy. And almost all of my wool stash came from Salvation Army stores or garage sales. I use 80%-100% wool. Most comes from clothes. I found out the hard way to be careful, you don't want heavy wool coats that when you felt it-it becomes really thick heavy wool. Good luck to all who wish to try wool, it's fun.

I've been wanting to try felting, but I suspect I'll have a hard time finding much in the way of wool at local thrift shops here in Southeast Texas!

for my wool quilts i use regular cotton batting- generally either dream cotton or hobbs heirloom-i also used flannel backing- came out beautiful- but it would depend on how heavy you want your quilt to be- a wool quilt is pretty heavy- you do not necessarily need a batt if you don't want to use one. i used a fabulous benartex double sided flannel which was a dream to work with and really made my quilt very soft/fluffy/warm/fabulous! i buy 100% wool items take them home- deconstruct them & toss them right into the washer- generally i add very very hot water(heated on my stove) along with the hottest water from my tap- and i use a regular/heavy agitation cycle- starting it over 2 or 3 times before letting the washer drain---with a small amount of detergent---then a cold rinse- then into the hot dryer- the wools come out fabulously felted & ready to use- i over dye some and use others as they are- the ones that come out really heavy---thicker than i expected are used for special appliques and rugs- i love wool rugs almost as much as i love quilts (almost) my wool quilt has been washed/dried a few times now and comes out wonderful- i believe will be around for a long time after i am gone. :)
