Working on a collage of my dog
1 Attachment(s)
I have been using Susan Carlson's method to collage this wall hanging of our black lab as a Christmas gift for my husband. I will probably use a dark red background. I would welcome any ideas or suggestions. I will be covering with mesh and blending some with thread painting.

Looks great so far...sorry, I have no suggestions.
Oh my, just keep going like you are doing. it looks great so far!!
He/she is gorgeous!
wow, looks super. what color mesh will you use? and will that affect the red background?
That looks wonderful! I am so impressed by your work and wish I had some of your talent.
The eyes on your dog are beautiful -- your husband is going to love it! |
What a wonderful collage. The eyes are so real. The only thing I might change is to lighten up the area under the nose. I think a red background would be perfect.
You really nailed those eyes. I think that is a very hard part of it.
Neat! Great use (and hunt) of the fabrics needed. The eyes really sparkle~
I have a fine black mesh. I only put it over my collage. I stitch around the edge then trim the mesh. It keeps all the edges down. It really doesn't change the color much but just softens the blends.
Looking good!

Eyes are beautiful. I have no talent but, I think the nose and mouth area is a bit too busy. I would replace the lighter colors with darker. Just a suggestion.
The dog's eyes are mesmerizing. You've done great honor to your dog.:)
You have done a wonderful job of bringing out the detail of this beautiful black lab. I think it is hard to do that for a black dog. I find it hard to show their detail even in a photograph. (My daughter has two beautiful black labs.) And you captured the beautiful brown eyes, also. The red background will let the face shine. I love it, can you tell? Your husband will, too! Hope you show a picture when completed.

Wow! Great job. Can’t wait to see the end product!

Check out the quilts made by Ann Shaw. She uses some unusual graphic fabrics as backgrounds. She has some dog quilts. Her quilts are pieced, but the inspiration will be there.
Amazing. I admire your courage and talent
Wow! Beautiful work. I am sure your husband will be thrilled to receive this gift.
Outstanding!!!
Fantastic work!
The only thing that struck me is that with most dogs there is usually some sort of split that travels down from the middle of the nose to create the lips. Maybe just a tiny bit more definition in that area. Black animals are really tough to do and you've done a really good job. Watson |
No suggestions. Just appreciation for the lovely gift you are making. I'm betting he will LOVE it!

You are doing great! While the eyes are very realistic, the creamy fabric bothers me. I think I'd like a whiter fabric there especially since the rest of the dog is all blacks, greys and whites. I also agree with the part below his nose being lighter so that there is more differentiation between the nose and the body. A split in that part might help that, too.
Keep up the great work! |
Beautiful, would like to try collage myself
Your black lab is stunning!!!! We have had labs for many years and love them;so, we are very familiar with their endearing expressions. Your is just perfect. I think red would be wonderful in the background; maybe something of a batik or print with movement in it as opposed to solid. I will be anxious to see the finished quilt.

looks great to me

Your quilt looks outstanding! I am humbled by your skill...there is no way I could stitch up anything nearly as lifelike. And it is such a thoughtful gift for your DH.
