Would love to know how you would fmq this wallhanging or tablerunner

I just finished this wallhanging for my brother whose home is contempary. It is a Thank-you gift. I would like your thoughts on how to fmq it. I don't want it to take away from the design and be too busy. It is a pattern by Elizabeth Long in a Patchwork & Quilting Magazine. I was thinking of stitch in the ditch for the blocks but don't know about the black border. I would appreciate any and all opinions. Thanks

My goodness that is a neat work of art he will surely love it. If there is a Jo Ann's or Michaels near you bet they could frame it up good.

Mad Mimm 01-21-2012 04:55 PM

I am not good for any quilting suggestions, but wow, what lovely work and what a beautiful runner.

vejquilts 01-21-2012 05:06 PM

I could stare at it all day. Absolutely beautiful!

DianneK 01-21-2012 05:29 PM

it is a work of art, stitch in the ditch!

blueangel 01-21-2012 06:01 PM

Beautiful.

SWEETPEACHES 01-21-2012 06:05 PM

Wow. That's beautiful!

Rock Lady 01-21-2012 06:27 PM

That is an eyecatcher! Wonderful job. I suggest some kind of design in the border.

Tartan 01-21-2012 06:45 PM

I have a bunch of the Log Cabin Twist paper piecing sheets. I really should use them up and your lovely piece is inspiring me. I would STD on the twist blocks becaue you want the design to stand out. I think I would mimic the twist on the border but only half? Kind of like half of the lotus shaped flowers you see in Egyptian art murals? Whatever you decide it will be beautiful!

julia58 01-21-2012 06:53 PM

That is just beautiful. Pat yourself on the back. Great job.

bjchad 01-21-2012 07:21 PM

I agree to STD for the blocks. How about a Greek key pattern in the borders?

owlvamp 01-21-2012 07:23 PM

What lovely work and what a beautiful runner! You did an awesome job.

playswithcolor 01-21-2012 07:32 PM

What kind of batting are you going to use? That would make a difference. Maybe try a google image search for twisted log cabin quilts and see who others have quilted them. There is a book out about this pattern too.

playswithcolor 01-21-2012 07:35 PM

the book is titled: Log Cabin with a twist

Moonglow 01-21-2012 07:37 PM

Beautiful work.

skowron5 01-21-2012 07:38 PM

What beautiful work.

acesgame 01-21-2012 07:38 PM

I like the movement so I might start in the middle of each block and do a progressive spiral to give it more movement and then maybe crosshatch in the border.

QuiltnNan 01-21-2012 08:07 PM

i love it! perhaps concentric circles?

Dolphyngyrl 01-21-2012 08:11 PM

SID would probably be your best bet over fmq, Sometimes simple is just better for certain types of patterns

Quilted Dogs 01-21-2012 08:15 PM

What a great design, just love it and great job

Zephyr 01-22-2012 05:34 AM

Yes, I think I would stitch in the ditch also. I surely wouldn't want to take anything away from that beautiful piece. Congrats!

CharlotteO 01-22-2012 05:42 AM

stunning, this is definitely on my bucket list, as soon as I learn a little more. and develop more quilting skills

piepatch 01-22-2012 05:42 AM

This is a very nice piece. I think your idea of stitch in the ditch for the blocks is a good one, but I am lost for an idea on quilting the border.

gigi10 01-22-2012 05:48 AM

There is a design on the border. I can see lines that could cross. I would follow what is there and not compete. That is just beautiful.

catladyquilts 01-22-2012 05:55 AM

beautiful, my only suggestion would be to quilt in the ditch

QuilterChick 01-22-2012 05:58 AM

I would definitely SID; on the black border, I'm thinking a few straight rows of metallic gold stitches about 3/8" apart to accent all around the border. Or use a wide double needle with that if you have one.

Jadie 01-22-2012 05:59 AM

I would stitch in the ditch............ It would be great if could make your boarder look like a frame but keep it modern...

dunster 01-22-2012 07:34 AM

That is beautifully done, wonderfully fabrics, and it does have a nice modern look. I wouldn't do SID. Perhaps some gentle curves that follow the curves of the design? I like the Greek key idea for the border.

yellowwroses 01-22-2012 07:36 AM

wow beautiful

nena 01-22-2012 08:26 AM

Awesome. I would use as a wall hanging. I would be afraid to use as a runner.

jgriinke 01-22-2012 10:57 AM

That is stunning! I would stitch in the ditch in the sprials, how about keeping is simple in the border and just do a straight line not quite half way down on the border. Do you have a double needle? That would be great, to just do one line of stitching that is double.

Bueniebabe 01-22-2012 11:34 AM

wow, very nice

Lorraine Simon 01-22-2012 01:14 PM

Sorry I can't help you but I love it.
Colors and fabric go well together...
Thanks for sharing.

northern lass 01-22-2012 03:16 PM

Beautiful hanging. Your brother will love it. I would probably SID

Terricat 01-22-2012 08:56 PM

What an excellent choice of fabrics to put together! Great Job.

grammysharon 01-23-2012 09:24 AM

I agree, SID would show off the piecing and the beauty of the block on the back!!!!

I agree with stitch in the ditch too.

3incollege 01-23-2012 01:06 PM

that is so pretty, so clever with fabric choices.

Jerseyrayne 02-28-2012 05:47 PM

I want to Thank everyone for all their comments and suggestions and I want to update you all, that I took your suggestion and SID except in the very center block and I did straight lines 1/4" apart around the black outside border.
I love it, all I have to do is handstitch the label on the back and mail it to my brother. I tried to take a picture, but none of the stitching shows, sorry.
