I am making 2 memory quilts for children whose father was killed in an accident. The mother wanted quilts for each child (2) made out of her husband's shirts. There are t-shirts and regular western shirts. I finished one of the quilts today (the girls) but I am not very happy with it. I am not willing to make it over, but if I could improve it with a different border or something, I'd consider doing that. I've invested way more time in it than I ever expected to, but it has been a learning experience. The boy's quilt will be much simpler--just large blocks with 2 inch sashing between the blocks.
The mother is thinking these will be keepsakes for the children to take with them when they leave home. I used cuffs, sleeves, etc in the borders to carry out the idea they come from his shirts.

It is beutiful. Just go with it. a job well done.

Two questions -
- did you put it on a design wall before sewing it together?
- why the fabric with the pink flowers?

Because -
- it seems kind of jumbled; I have trouble finding where to look (ah, I came back and found the pattern!)
- the flowers kind of distract but if it's significant fabric, I understand wanting to use it

What a thoughtful project you have taken on. I can only imagine the quilt has been sprinkled with tears as the shirts are cut. It is sure to be dearly loved and a warm memory wrap.

you might want to share what you aren't happy with, but as a casual observer, it looks like everything is laying correctly, the quilt has movement of color through it. It wasn't easy to put tshirts and western shirts together, but it looks like you have done a fine job of it! <wave>

I do not see anything wrong with this quilt, its beautiful and it will be sew special to the kids:thumbup: :thumbup:

The borders need to be separated from the body, maybe a solid color between the two. The cuffs, collars may look better as a pillow as they distract from the beauty of the body.

I like the body of the quilt,

I have one made out of my dad's shirts and pants, just squares sewn together. Used blue jeans cut in squares for the back and the border. will try to get a pic to show you.

I agree with CarolJ. Adding a solid larger sashing before the border will put the main point of interest upon the center of the quilt. Think of it as a photo within a picture frame. Congratulations for making such wonderful memories for the children.

I think the flower print draws the eyes away from the actual design of the quilt. I love the way you used all the different shirts in this quilt, gives it personality. I am sure it will truly be loved.

I agree that a solid color sashing--darker would make the colors pop! I think the flowers lighten it up and makes the sashing blend in the the other blocks.
