It's nice both ways but I prefer the applique.
I would use the diamonds.

Nice quilt. I do like the diamonds the best. Do you have an embroidery machine and could perhaps embroider in each white area? Something very simple. Or maybe FMQ? Whatever you decide, I am sure it will be welcome.

I would use the little blocks (diamonds?) in the white areas all the way around Then enhance it with colorful quilting. It is a great quilt -Let us know what you wind up doing

I like all of the appliques inside the square. Could you alternate them? That might look nice as well.
