Default UFO Finished: Chicken and Stars

Lap sized sampler quilt with stars I began piecing in a class by Alex Anderson, supporting her Simply Stars book published by C&T Publishing in 1996. The stars I included from that class/book are Friendship Stars, Double Sawtooth Star, variation of Martha Washington Star, Best of All, 54-40 or Fight, Shining Brighter, Le Moyne Star, Memory and Double Le Moyne Star. Also included is a Girl’s Favorite block and an appliqué sun block from “We Made it Through the Winter”, a Country Threads quilt book they published in 1995.

The large chicken is from the Chicken Salad quilt pattern from Country Threads. And the small chickens are from the Winter quilt in the Country Threads Quilt Shop series book published by That Patchwork Place in 1992. I’m sure I used a pattern for the black bird (crow?) but I’m not sure where I found it. Given the source of the other appliqué patterns, probably Country Threads. Country Threads was ( and still is) Mary Tendall Etherington and Connie Tesene.

The center part of the quilt, along with the skinny red borders on the top and bottom, was completed sometime in the late 1990s. Lucky for me, I saved enough of the fabric to complete the skinny borders on the sides. And, also lucky for me, I saved a graph paper pattern of the planned quilt. Finally completed the quilt this week. One less UFO in the closet!!!

I love the whimsy of the chickens and the crow and the sun. It was already a good sampler but the touches of whimsy really make it special. I like it.

Fun quilt! I really like the three little chicken blocks. I like how you did the borders, makes good use of smaller pieces.

What a fabulous finish and a delightful combination of patterns and whimsy. Sometimes I could kick myself for waiting so long to finish a project, especially when it turns out so wonderful. I love it.
