I've been making calico blocks from 1930s patterns. I saw this block on etsy and it said it was vintage. Looked easy enough, so I made some. Now, I would like to know the name to see if it's maybe a 1930s pattern. Thanks!

    It's called a Shoo-fly block.

Thanks! I wonder if it's a 1930s pattern? I made these blocks: churn dash, bow tie, and this block -- all from calicos.

Actually, according to Barbara Brackman in Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns, this was first called Shoo Fly (pattern #276) in The Ladies Art Company as early as 1897.

So, yes, it would have been pieced in the thirties in those wonderful feed sack prints, but it came about before the turn of the century.

Thanks, Jan, I thought this pattern was made way earlier. I have some feedsacks; I should try making some in the same patterns.

Research on the internet shows this block became popular in the late 1800s. It is beautiful in the calicos.
