I recently finished my daughter's quilt and finally sent it home with her on Monday. She was the brilliant one who chose the fabrics, all from the Robert Kaufman Imperial 6 collection. The Large print in the antique colorway lent itself wonderfully to a One Block Wonder. She was pretty happy how it all came out in the kaleidoscope patterns. She said it reminds her of looking at the night sky. Which was funny when she turned it over and read the quilt tag. I had named it “I Dreamed of the Milky Way”.

Along the way I learned a TON of new things on the QB. This new quilt would not have made it all the way through without the advice and wisdom I gleaned from the pages of this board! Through you all, I've learned the joys of using a walking foot, starching your quilt fabrics, using spray adhesives, the best battings to use, how to miter corners, and how washing your finished quilt before gifting not only removes undesirable chemicals, but the resulting cushiness helps disguise your not so perfect work.

The hardest part for me was figuring out how to quilt a OBW. I had never actually done more than stitch in a ditch before. After searching the Internet, I finally drew up hexagon graph paper with my computer’s Paint program and experimented with several designs. I posted some on the QB and actually did use the one I named Daisy Chain.

Well let me say: It is a lot easier to draw something on your computer than actually execute it successfully with your sewing machine. It didn’t help that my old sewing machine died with it’s needle stuck down in the fabric either. That was a few minutes of panic! But I will be forgiving toward myself and say that for a first effort in FMQ, it came out better than expected. Luckily the patterns in the fabric are so distracting that you don’t really notice the quilting. I am asking for leniency under the “man on a galloping horse” rules of quilt inspection. Haha! ;)

That is just stunningly beautiful! Absolutely awesome work, BuzzinBumble! Indeed it does resemble the Milky Way on a crisp clear night!! You can be proud of your work & the accomplishment of a finished work of "heart"!
