Hi. Some months ago, I posted a picture of the starflower quilt that I am not crazy about. Since then, I have done the repairs around the outside and will be finished sewing on the binding this week. Below are pix ... one is the same starflower picture I posted before; the other is the design that I will be hand quilting in each of the 100 blocks. Note 2 things please:

    1. I'm not buying more thread for the hand quilting. I own dark blue, bright red, variegated red, vari. blue, vari. purple, and med. burgundy. The med. burgundy is my color of choice + I have 2 full spools of it, but only one each of the others.

    2. The backing is black, also, so the design in burgundy will stick out like a sore thumb on the back. However, I'm planning to go around each of the melons one more time (because they need it!) but this time with the burgundy thread using a tiny zig-zag stitch. I'm thinking with both the zig-zag melons and the hand-stitched block centers in the burgundy color, the back should look o.k. too.

    Whatcha think, please?

Thank you! However, the sample is done with a caramel color thread (it was done to see how quickly and neatly I could hand quilt that pattern). Do you got an opinion about using the burgundy thread?? The backing is a marbled black, but it is still black and any color thread other than black will show up vividly. That's why I think if I do the same color around the melons (which is a re-do because I have done SID once), the back will look fine.

Personally i would do the burgundy and black on the bottom. To bad you don't have a veriegated burgundy. Love your quilt though and I'm sure it's going to be great no matter what colour you decide.

Thanks. I can't do black on the bottom because I'll be hand-quilting each block. I'll be machine sewing when I zig zag around the melons, but if I've already got hand quilted burgundy stitches showing, then I want burgundy on the back zig zag as well. Anyway, I'll do a sample block on the quilt itself and I should be able to tell from that. Quite often my mental image of something and the reality of it are different, so I have to wait and see.

I'm from B.C., too, once upon a time.

It wouldn't matter if the stitches show on the backing, you do beautiful hand quilting and you should be proud to show it off. I use to hand quilt, now I love the big stiple on the machine, it takes me too long to do it by hand. Your quilt is gorgous!!!

Wow-what a beautiful quilt. Your hand stitching is great--I like the idea of the burgandy thread to show it off. Good luck-that's a lot of work!

Thank you all. I had another "brain wave" at the time I was trying to stay awake after supper but kept falling asleep in my book. Since the black backing is marbled, I could use a gray colored thread. If I don't like the burgundy when I try it, I'll see about finding just the right shade of gray ... possibly a blue gray??? If I were to get exactly the right shade, it would bring out the blue in the melons, but not be overwhelming on the black.

Just a thought I had; it would mean buying more thread after all.

I love your colors in this quilt!!!! As for the thread, I would go with the varigated blue if you think you have enough.
