They are hiding holes. I had thought about putting buttons over them then while I was looking I came across the thimbles and spools of thread. And went "HMMMM" . :-)

I had thought about going to buy some fancy paper but I am trying not to spend any money(saving for a massage and Andy is due for a grooming). I really had a hard time cutting into the quilt top. Took me almost an hour.
I am thinking of maybe seeing if I can find others and put them together using paper and see how they turn out.
