This quilt is for my15 year old son for Christmas. The red and gold are his color choices. The center "H" is his favorite font. I think I could get away with using some black, but the quilt needs to be mostly red and gold -- more red than gold would be OK.

I have no idea where to go from here. It is now 36 x 40. I would like it to be at least a large throw size. The LQS suggested a narrow black border and "then some other blocks". Great. What other blocks might go with this?

I am open to any and all suggestions. For now, I'm not looking at this until the board gives me some ideas.

I like the idea of a black border. If you want additional borders, you can continue with an angled red/gold border to tie in the middle with the border.

A checkerboard border might be fun and easy!

Lisa, take a look at what's under the quilt top. Though THAT fabric wouldn't "go" with it (too much white maybe and the green doesn't cut it), what other fabrics do you have with patterns that might have more of what you're looking for? If you can post some pictures of what that would look like then maybe we could decide. Also, what is the H for?

The Checkers board might be nice...but you could also do the small black border and do another border of like the stripes that you have just make them go the opposite way.

Or you could do a zig-zag border as well.

I agree, narrow black border then various blocks that use either 2 or 3 colors (gold, red & black) going around. Mix them up using quilterscache.com blocks. Sampler blocks.

Or ... alternating rail fences

Or ... a brick border going in the opposite direction of the diagonals

or ... a braided border of three colors in the opposite direction of the diagonals

or ... a series of the other 25 letters of the alphabet going around (even if you have to use some twice)

I like the idea of a small black border to stop the diagonals.

My first thought after that was flying geese.

For some reason though, this really reminds me of one of the houses of Harry Potter. you didn't say the age of your son, but is he into HP? If so, you could use a plain/solid border and then applique onto it (and possibly into the diagonals) some things from HP.....
