I am interested in making a large diaper/messenger bag with lots of interior pockets. Please can anyone recommend a pattern that might be suitable.

maybe the bow tucks pattern but you would need to upsize it??? :-)

I would google (or whatever you use) free diaper bag patterns. You should hit the mother load.

You could easily make a flap (messenger bag type) and add to this pattern. Super easy. The straps could be made longer also.

I agree unless you are wanting to buy a commerical pattern. Then I would say Butterick 4560 it has a BUNCH of pieces but it turns out beautiful when its done. I have made MANY of them.
