I have read about the Singer Featherweights on this board and, of course, you people make me want one!! I found one on our local craigslist for $65. I researched the serial number and it was built in New Jersey in 1935, but the model number is 99, not 221. Would you buy it?

I just bought one 2 weeks ago! BUT! It is NOT a Featherweight! That baby is HEAVY! I got it to add a crank on...don't know why, but I just had to have something non-electric. Maybe I am planning to teach very small children I don't trust with a foot pedal! I have a Featherweight too and love it. I have schleped that little beauty on the airplane when I went to my parents house. (I will NOT sew on my mom's machine...I learned on that one..and its set up in the back of an unheated, un cooled closet that has scorpions! ICK!)

I guess I don't care if it's heavy. I don't think I'd be moving it much. They say it's electric - I'm not interesting in hand cranking. I read on this board that some newer ones have reverse. I don't know if this one does. I REALLY appreciate the comments. You guys are so smart!!

No it looks like too much $ for the condition it is in and this one has no reverse. The 99 and 201 are on my wish list too. The 99 is a smaller machine but it is heavy so nothing like a Feather Weight or 301 which are very portable due to weight. You might want to hold out for a newer model that is a direct drive and has a reverse. If you do not need to move it you might also consider the full size 15-91 or 201. The picture shows a full size Singer 15-91 direct drive and with a reverse.
Note the little reverse lever on the front right of the machine. If it is a knob it does not have reverse. this is a Singer 15-91. |

I have a 99 and it has a beautiful stitch! Dont pass up a deal like that!!!!

Direct drive means gear driven, it has no external belt. See the belt on the Singer 99 in the advertisement. Since you want ellectric only I would look for a direct drive.
I have a Singer 201 that is belted and the motor did not work so I put that one in my threadle. I am looking for a Singer 201 direct drive, no belt, to do the actual quilting on. If it is a direct drive you can not put it in a treadle and I think it can not be converted to hand cranck.
