My wife and I just recently (Feb06) bought and re-opened an old fabric store that had been in operation at the same location for nearly 50 years before closing in 2001 in a small rural Oklahoma town. It’s a fabric "general store" where we also do mending, alterations, ironing, and machine repairs. I was a highliner previously, climbing power poles all over CO, TX, & OK, while my wife was a homemaker. She has sewn for over 40 years, making her own clothing while in Jr High School, and made many of the clothes for the family (me, her, and our three children who are now in their 30s) while our family was younger.

She still makes some of her own clothes, but has been deep into quilting & crafts for the past 10 years. She’s quilted numerous quilts on vintage electric machines, both straight-line and free-motion, and we set up a Singer Industrial 96-40 treadle/electric for FM last summer that she’s getting acquainted with. Once she feels comfortable with her hand motion, she may try learning the foot motion of treadling to add another dimension to her sewing.

I enjoy collecting and working on old sewing machines. I sew some too (mending and repair work), but usually not quilting. I like the heavy duty sewing on a Singer 29K70 treadle, a Singer 66-1 hand crank, or a Consew 225 Industrial. I participate on several sewing machine groups, but my wife doesn’t. She pretty much stays busy with her sewing.
