I'm making a quilt to be used at the beach as a "beach blanket" and wonder what kind of batting to use? I have to expect that it will get wet and therefore I'd want something that would dry quickly. Also, I don't want it to be too big folded up so it can be carried easily. I've had suggestions from polyester batting to muslin, to nothing in between the layers. Has anyone made this type of quilt? What worked for you?

that's a tough one. I once used flannel for batting for a summer quilt and it was perfect, but that may not dry very quickly. I'm thinking no batting.

Can u use towel material? Just thinking?

I would use a low loft poly, as it dries so fast ... because poly does not really absorb any moisture. The oil based fiber never really gets truley wet. Even though you think it may/will not get wet , it will be good to not have issues if it does get wet either on the beach or in the "gear" that it may get next to in travel to and from.
I have a roll of low loft poly that is smaller than its comparable size cotton batting.

I would use a low loft poly for this too. It will dry quicker than cotton, muslin, or flannel :D:D:D

How about hobbs thermore poly batting. It is a very thin batting.

Looks like I'm off to my LQS to find some low-loft poly batting. Thanks for all the suggestions - After I've had a chance to use the quilt this summer, I'll let you all know how it worked out!

If you have a Hancock Fabric near you, you might check out their Grand Flannel. It is much better than regular flannel.

one year we made about 30 beach quilts...we used low-loft poly batting...it dries quickly, holds up to lots of abuse, seemed to keep sand from migrating through...work well for us...
i made a couple with only muslin- but liked them better with the batting.

I once made a quilt with terry cloth backing and no batting. It worked pretty good.
