Am wondering if anyone else experiences bad backaches while using their sewing machine.
I have tried every level surface I can think of to put any one of my 3 sewing machines on - all different heights. Tried several different chair - and table chair combos. Wonder what I can try next. Please post if you have this problem, and what you have tried - and what seems to help. THANKS Julie  sighing |
I just have to take periodic breaks.

Yep! I get backaches all the time and hip pain too from sitting at my machine.

Someone here sells " lifters" altho , I have not tried them, ppl rave how it really helps their back pain...

Next time you sit down at your machine, make sure that you are not hunching your shoulders. Sit all the way back in your chair, feet level on the floor. For some reason, I seem to tense my arms, my neck and back when I sew, I must always tell myself to breath and RELAX!

Blu? what is a lifter?

Maybe try wearing a lightweight backpack and see if that helps. I know that somebody makes one especially for quilters but can't remember who... google might be a help there.
When I went on vacation I wore a backpack purse and was so surprised that my back held up so well with that. Also, make yourself a ziplock rice bag and lay it on your tummy when you're in bed on your back. That's a trick I learned from a pain class... and it really works! Strengthens your inner core effortlessly.... You can add or take away rice to make it comfortable, and adjust it as your muscles get stronger. Hope you try this, because it has worked for me and some others in that class. Blessings on you! |
I get them too. Try the lifting the back of your machine so it is tilted towards you. Allosw you to sit up straight. I tried the backpack thing when I went on a 10 mile hike. Worked wonders for me too.

I've tried everything with the chair and table as well.
I take many breaks and stretch which does help. (my neck too) |
It sounds like you need a comfy chair that can be easily height adjusted. This way you can find the exact height that will help you and your back. I love mine and no, I can't say I suffer from aches!
